Title: Berkeley pump rattle
Post by: phils flotilla on May 04, 2012, 05:45:52 PM
Hey every one. I was out on the water today, running my boat making sure it was all good for the river this up coming memorial weekend. It ran fine for most of the day but at the end going back to the launch the boat started to rattle and knock and lost just about all the power it has. It seemed like it was not coming from the engine more the pump. I immediately slowed down and limped it in to the launch. I noticed a good amount of water coming in from the pump area where the drive shaft meets the pump. I went to a local boat shop and they believe it is the bearing and seal I also meet some guy in line at the shop who seamed interested in my problem. I asked him and he seemed to have the same opinion. Once I got home I started the boat up again and for about a 10 sec it sounds fine but then it starts to rattle. Any help or ideas. The motor is a 76 460 new heads and tuned up recently. The pump is old I’m sure its the original its a Berkeley 12JB-A at least that is what I found on the pump the serial number 7559062. Does Berkeley still make parts for this or what do I do. I am in North County San Diego but the boat for the most part is stored in east county, Are there any trust worthy shops around here or people. If it is just the thrust bearing and seal is it something me and a friend can fix. Thanks for reading if you need any other info let me know.

Thanks
Philip

i think i would dissconnect the drive line and spin the pump by hand and go from there

sounds like you lost your thrust bearing.

theres a shop down there in SD called JE?? performance or something of that sorts. i know they do a lot of performance stuff, but not sure if they do basic lake boat stuff. i dont see why not.

There is also GS Marine in Norco and MPD in Costa Mesa

Ok cool guys and thanks for the info. Is the thrust bearing something I can do myself by taking the pump apart. Also does berkeley use the same thrust bearing for all there pumps. I feel this pump is old like from the 70's its a 12JB-A model and I cant find info about it anywhere. Looks like I will be calling JE in the moring or first thing monday.

Ya the 12jb is pretty much the same as a 12jg....i think its just an updated casting.....same parts though. The "-A" part signifies your impeller size.

If your thrust bearing went out, you might have done some damage that will require machine work and a new wear ring to repair it....which i dont know much about. If you want to try to tackle it on your own, tear into it and post some pictures. Theres a lot of people here with the knowledge you need and are more than willing to help out. Shop for your parts at www.cpperformance.com (they own the rights to berkeley jet now) or www.rexmar.com ...anywhere else is just a reseller for the most part.

Just a couple of things to check before you get too carried away blaming a bad jet, or motor, for the "rattle" and start irreparably ripping stuff apart. Could be minor. Check all the bolts for your PTO shaft, adaptor (If it has) and flexplate. Seen those come loose more than once. Check your dampner, wouldn't be the first I've seen start to come apart either. Lastly, check the U-Joints in the driveline. Those are almost NEVER greased, and a lot do not have zerks in them anyway. Lastly, (firstly, really) double check a rock or something isn't stuck in the impeller.  ;)

Ok so I have been looking at the expaned exploded views of parts list for the pump I am using the 12JG model. Not to sound uninformed what is the flexplate and dampner. Today I am going to be looking in the hand hole to see if can see any rocks or blockage I will also be looking under the boat in the intake grate, an checking the pto bolts, u-joints. I plan to undo the u-joints start the motor and make sure the rattel is not in the motor.

The flexplate is your "flywheel" or "ring gear" bolted to the rear of the crankshaft that your starter uses to start it, and where your jet drive PTO is bolted to the center of. The dampner is the hub at the front of the crankshaft with a pulley boled on it to drive yer alternator.

Ok thanks Ray those should be easy enough to check and the info on what it is and where it is located is very well described.

Update checked what I could and all seemed fine the flex plate, inspection hole, and u joints. I think the next step is to pull the pump out. Do I just start at the rear of the boat and start to unbolt it and work my way forward till i get to the suction area were the thrust bearing is located. Do you guys think since it will be apart it would be a good time to get a new impeller and rebuild most the pump.

If your pulling pump for thrust bearing...replace all seals and gaskets. If your impeller is good leave it alone. The packing behind bearing is more than likely where your water is coming from. Those are to be snug not to tight. Over tighten will cause it to leak and then need to be replaced. How did it run without pump hooked up?

Well I got the pump out yesterday. It was a fun time for sure took me most of the day since I had never done it before. I have been told to replace all the seals I am actuly thinking of buying the master rebuild kit ($495) with the impeller and all the other good stuff that comes with the kit and I will be caling JP Marine in lLakeside to see what kind of price they have to jut rebuilt it them self.

Update: Well I have the offical word, the pump is going to need some love like $1200 worth of love. New impeller wear ring bearings seals. Is it somre thing i can do my self and save 600 or so bucks. I am also thinking that if I can find a Pump on here or craigs list and its cheap enough that I will just get that to get me threw the next few trips. Any one have a pump laying around. HAHA

i just redid my pump in the shop with a buddy who has done a few of them...cost me $500 bucks for the pump kit with EVERYTHING you will need to have a brand new pump..i also baught the bowl bushing tool which is a must buy to replace the bowl bushings..it also cost me a 30 pack and i had a brand new pump...other than the bowl bushing tool i used everything i had in my roll away to rebuild it...nothing special..just be sure your diligant about keeping everything clean and read the manual about how it all goes together and how it comes apart if you dont have someone who knows what they are doing with you..it will save you a wad of cash to put else where into the boat..

hope that helps some..good luck bud..its a drag for sure, but when the pump is done you will be way stoked

also, i baught everything from CP Performance, who is the owner of Berkeley Jet Drives so you know your getting the most complete kit available and everything will be exactly what you need and will be put back together to factory spec.

Ok cool thanks Cole. I am going to have to find a manual where did you get yours? I also found a guy selling a pump new rebuild last year might just buy it from him. The only this is the pump he has is a 12JC, do you know the difference between 12JB. And if i do it myself with a friend CPP is the place for parts.

If you get a JC your going backwards...the JC doesnt have a split bowl, which the JB should since it is an updated casting of the JG pump which does have a split bowl...someone please chime in if im telling false info here...the split bowl is nice because you can add a wedge or a droop snoot and get some change in the ride and potentially more MPH...Some say the JC flows more but you wont be able to tell.

IMHO your best bet is to buy the rebuild kit from CPP and get it done...start a thread and you can even call people like Tom at JBP who is great and will usually help you threw any issue you have while doing something like this...i say to rebuild it because if you get this new pump and he didnt take care of it, than its garbage and you wont get top performance out of it anyway and you wont be happy yet...so do yourself a favor and rebuild the pump you have and get the best pump you can for the money...do it yourself on a weekend and be done with it..good chance to be in the garage away from the lady and drink some beers anyway

Just a update. I should be getting my ups order today full of all kinds of goodies. The master rebuild kit berkeley tool kit and a few other small things. then tomorrow is beer and rebuild day. Does anyone know what I should be using to seal the transom housing to the transom. I cant wait to get to work on my boat.

It'll come with a transom gasket but ide use some silly cone around the perimeter for a double seal..water will find a way in if you let it
