Title: Berkeley white paint
Post by: Vegas on January 03, 2013, 12:19:43 AM
I have just gotten my boat buffed up and the entire interior redone.  This now makes my pump look horrible as the paint is flaking off a little bit.  I am going to sand it down and repaint it this week.  What kind of paint is the best to match the original color?  Also, what about the blue for the "BERKELEY" letters on the transom cover?

Thanks!

Lucas

I think alot of guys are using Rustoleum appliance epoxy spray paint. A search of "appliance paint" brings up several posts.

Appliance paint from Home Depot or Lowes works pretty good and it's cheap.  As for the letters, I haven't many guys lay those out in the original blue.  Most just get the white treatment to match, you could mask the letters and shoot them in blue but sounds like a pita.

I was gonna say, a Blue colored Sharpie would probaby work fine to do the lettering also.  ;)

Awesome, thanks for all of the replies everyone! I am just going to be shooting the part of the drive on the outside of the boat.  The part inside the boat doesnt look bad, so I am just goingto clean it all up.  How many cans should this take?  I was thinking 2 would provide several coats. I will also go with a blue paint pen for the lettering.  I want to do the lettering blue just because it matches the boat's color.

When I repainted mine it used just over one can, that's the suction housing and all

From reading other posts after searching for appliance epoxy, I see that the stuff seems to cover minor chips and things pretty well.  How should I go about prepping it?  Does sanding work well, or would a wire brush drill attachment be better?  Should I used a zinc primer?

if chips scratches ect. are deep to get it smooth you will need to take it down a ways. so then you WILL need to prime. but if there not to bad just scuff up so panit will stick
oh and BTW you mite want to use some kind cleaner b4 sanding 2 make sure theres no oily stuff on there  it will fish eye up bad . then you'll have to start all over  :banghead:

It is thick and covers minor scratches good.  Be careful of the killer overspray from this stuff cause it comes out thick and so is the overspray.  I thought I had everything around covered up good but ater dying a few hours and I pulled paper and tape off overspray got under seems and on things I thought were far enough away.

When I have done this for friends I would buy a blue spray paint and just spray it into a plastic cup and use a small foam brush to dab on the letters after painting white. After 2 coats it would look just like you masked it off for 2 hours and sprayed it in 10 seconds but it only would take 5 mins per coat

Anxious to see your results. I've got cans of this paint around and have been thinking if painting my transom bezel and bowl to make it look better against the new droop and nozzle. I could've had Jack McClure's powder coat guy do the whole pump for 200 something, but I knew I had more shit to buy. I've used this paint on floor sinks in five guys burger joints, fresh and easy stores and CVS pharmacies. It was the only rattle can paint I found that held up after brutality.
