Title: Billet Distributor
Post by: GottaJet on May 07, 2008, 07:54:44 PM
I've finally took the plunge and decided to ditch the old prestoline points distributor and I picked up one of the Pertronix billet marine deals. What do I need to know when changing them out? Any time and frustration you can save me will be greatly appreciated.   Thanks

I don't know anybody around here running the Pertronix. I have heard good things about them. Is it a ready to run or need a ignition box??

Sorry it's the plug n play marine version so no box needed.

I have the Pertronix magnetic pick up installed into a mallory dual point distributor.  The only thing you need to make sure of is if you need a ballast resistor.

What coil do you have?

Thats a good tip because the instructions are saying to remove it for best performance. Did you have a bad experience when you removed it?

With the add on Pertronix it says to run a ballast resistor or a resistor coil.  I was able to keep the resistor that was used for the points.

No problems so far.

... the instructions are saying to remove it for best performance...

That's what I would do, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Crewchief modified his distibutor from dual points to the new system I believe its called the Ignitor, totally different ballgame. With your new disty just follow the instructions and you will be fine. Dont run the resister.

What coil are you running?

I'm going to run a blaster 2. One problem I have is that a buddy and I pulled the old distributor and I'm not sure if I'm at TDC. Should I put the old one back in pull the coil wire and find TDC or can I do damage this way?   THANKS

If you know for sure where the rotor was pointing before you pulled the old distributor out then just put the new distributor in pointing in the same exact direction and orientate the spak plug wires exactly how it was on the old distributor.

If you didn't look at where the rotor was pointing before you pulled the old distributor out then you'll need to find TDC for the compression stroke of the number one cylinder. Actually, put the number one cylinder on it's compression stroke at where you normaly time your engine at (when it's at idle), so if you time the engine at 10 degree's before TDC put the number one cylinder at 10 degree's BTDC. Install the new distributor pointing the rotor at number 1 cylinder. Install the distributor cap with the number 1 spark plug wire directly above the rotor and finish out the firing order on the distributor cap (Chevy clockwise, Ford counter-clockwise).

You can find the compression stroke on number one cylinder with your finger in the spark plug hole (like you read on another thread) or if you'd like to "see it" you can pull the valve cover and watch the number 1's valves opening and closing and find the compression stroke that way. I personaly wouldn't use the key/starter to turn the engine over as your oil pump is driven by the distributor which you have already removed. Turn it over with a socket on the crank bolt. It'll turn over easier with the spark plugs removed.

Intake stroke = intake valve opens
compression stroke = both valves closed
power stroke = both valves closed
exhaust stroke = exhaust valve open
