I've heard this term used a lot and I have a new power plant going in my boat this winter. I obviously need a stainless impeller, but what exactly should be done to a pump to accept roughly 800hp. I'm sure there are a ton of questions, but i'm trying to understand what is needed. thanks

All I can tell you is what I have done in the past....Tom will chime in here I'm sure (or Josh).
I would whole heartedly recomend an ultimate wear ring, a double drilled billet thrust cap, double drilled stator (bowl), balanced impeller, race shaft, and a pump brace on the suction housing.
These are just the basics and way more can be done, like, stuffers, bowl and suction blending (Extrude Hone :thumbup: ) filled handhole, shoe, yada yada blah blah blah....
But this will keep it together and will be tough as nails...A little secret on the impeller though.....
Have the area of the keyway blended into the hub of the impeller on the ends. Out of the five failed stainless Impellers I have witnessed, four broke at the key groove, the fifth was simply used as a gravel grinder.... :thumbdown:

BTW, If you really want to go bulletproof, get a billet suction housing and stator. >:D

I was going to say don't forget the shaft, and sugest a pump brace also.... If I'm not mistaken the "blueprinting" simply means getting all of the clearances set right. Don't get me wrong I don't know chit......I just put a pump together...and after I finished I scratced my head and thought " gee I wonder if I was supposed to have that impeller balanced". Something tells me I'm about to wish I'd have had that thought BEFORE I did it, not after :banghead:

FWIW, I always dynamically (spin balance on two planes) my impellers, only because I have access to the tools and knowlege.
Stainless impellers, IMHO, should always be balanced on the shaft it will be run on, might just be me though. :-\
Aluminum, not as important, but a good idea (it's a weight thing)...

ok.. CHIT.. this sounds above my pay grade to do myself.. I suppose I'll need to find someone local to do this as I think it would be PITA to take out.. :banghead: Guess I need to gather some more info.

Maybe i am just lucky but I have 800+ HP in a stock Berkely with a aluminum A Impeller. I have made several W.O.T passes , have no pump brace and it lasted all season. I don't know for how much longer it would have , but it did last the whole season.

I have no where near 800 hp, but every time I'd unload my pump it sceeeerrd the chit out of me. I got tired of looking back to see if I exploded chit. I look at the shaft, impy, brace,ect. kinda like insurance.

You have been fortunate for sure...I peeled the outer shell of an aluminum Berkeley with a 427 Chevy at less than 6K RPM, just took one good hop and Kapow! Right foot was too slow fo sho... O0
They will run as long as they are loaded fairly square, but be assured, one day, you'll have an 800 HP motor crate.... :sly:

When HB cut down my impeller, he sent me straight to the balancing shop.

Honestly the Jet Suction and bowl (preferably a beefy Dominator ) should easily handle that HP , without regard a Stainless or Bronze Impeller and a 17-4 or AQ shaft , double drilled (bowl and extention hsg and some "extra strong billet pieces" like brg cap and Cleanout thrown in for good measure also needs some attention to bracing and reinforcement and a HP brg too More on this tommorow Nite nite ;)
