It's not all that complicated. Do you know what it does?

Basically you are just trying to eliminate some of the turbulence at the outlet of the impeller at the inlet of the bowl vanes.

By installing/building a plate between the two parts,  you are potentially reducing the aerated water going into the bowl. You may see an increase in performance with precision instruments,  but doubt seriously the Ass-O-Nometer will be able to differentiate.

Sometimes we see them recover from a rough water ventilation quicker,  that's about all I've ever personally witnessed.

I have a pattern for one of its something your interested in.

Pretty simple once you think about it. I always set mine up to be .030" away from the trailing edge of the impeller.

Don't over think it.

It is my humble opinion that the cone shaped stuffers are completely over thought.

JMO.

Flat surface to flat surface between the bowl and the impeller is more than adequate.

Snake oil is only good for turning a profit.

Cool thanks for info ...I'm just making sure flat stuffer will benefit because coned  is more time consuming ..

Im no expert, but i agree with GT. I dont see the coned ones really making a difference at all

Will a bowl stuffer raise jet pressure?

Potentially.  If the pump works exceptionally well it may have only a slight, if any pressure increase. If the pump is struggling with a fair amount of turbidity,  then it could benefit greatly.  You obviously can't "get something for nothing", but you can streamline and make what you do have easier to get. The increase would come from absorbing more HP, if that makes any sense at all.

Basically.... it won't hurt

Not 100% accurate.

Pumps that move huge volumes of water may see a decrease in the ability to turn the revs needed to keep the status quo.

In other words, it could actually absorb more power than you can muster dropping the engine out of its power band.

Likely less than a 1 in 300 chance,  but still.

Gt are you referring to a higher end hp deal?

Gt are you referring to a higher end hp deal?

Not necessarily.

I have worked on some big aluminum fishing boats with a ton of boat in the water turning AA impellers at 4,400-4,500 Rpm,  I always felt a stuffer would literally drop the engine out of its HP curve.

I would expect that the potential is there in other applications.

Keep in mind, these boats run under the absolute harshest of conditions and not at all typical of what most here are used to.

Well I guess I'll report what change it makes on my deal. Unfortunately I'm making lots of changes at one time.

I seriously doubt you will feel the changes with a stiffer, really on a data lover will tell ya with pressure/ rpm Ect.

I throw an inducer in before a stuffer.

I understand what you're saying jake. I figure it's 5 bucks in material, figure it's worth trying out while I have the bowl off.

I might get energetic and run it with and without. See what changes it makes of any at all

IDK, my stiffer sure seems to make a difference.

It's when you stuff the stiffer that the true performance is noticed most. ..

Hahahaha

Still needs finishing bolt holes and shaft hole .... What clearance are we looking for between impeller and stuffer? .030
-.035 ?

I dunno..... 30-35 seems to be the running theme.

But idk what these should be at

The number could be pretty small.

.030" would be really safe and probably as wide as I would go.

Think of it this way,  the impeller drives forward and there is little chance of contact under power. Deceleration could tell a different story however. I've seen as much as .005" end thrust on a new double row ball bearing.  That being said, it depends on what you feel you could get away with.

You could just build it to .025" and cut some labrynth grooves in the face.

In all honesty,  it's not going to be that critical ultimately.

If you live in an area where frost is of concern, don't forget to drill a small drain hole at the bottom.

What's a labrynth groove?

An extreme version of a tapered labrynth.

I suggest drilling and tapping the perimeter rather than drilling and tapping into the oil reservoir.

First, the bolts won't have anything to clamp directly on and second, will leak oil/water.

I thought about that bit on my Berkeley split bolt it didn't look lie there was enough meat .... Redrill and plug holes?

Should I use sealer or lock tight on bolts?

You don't need to plug those holes you already drilled, consider them pressure balancing holes.  Drill countersunk clearance holes for 10-24 on a 6.822 (Berkeley) or 6.913 (Dominator) bolt circle by no deeper than .625.  It won't really hurt anything if you break through.

Use anti-seize on SS bolts.

If you bolt through into the oil reservoir, you will need to seal the threads.  I would use Loctite.  Again, I recommend against doing it this way.

It's going to hit the impeller nut.  I put a 2.250 hole through the center.
