Ride plate and shoe
« on: January 20, 2011, 12:28:24 PM »
I'd like to install a ride plate and shoe on my 18' Tahiti , I'm running a Berk pump with a split "B" bowl and it's not a set back if that helps also a droop and place diverter. I've looked at several vendors and have seen some "adapt a plate" offerings that state you don't have to remove the intake from the boat to install the shoe and plate.

Any pro's / con's to this or should I just plan to remove the intake and machine (not sure) what machining is required to mount the shoe.
Don't mind the work...just want to do it correctly the first time. If machining is mandatory what exactly is required ~ is the shoe recessed into the intake and thru bolted or is this just a mill a flat and drill and tap deal?

Really appreciate your input.

Personally not a fan of boltons of anykind 'cept maybe Boobs  ;) and I dont sell them (add a shoe) or recommend them for a multitude of reasons , IMO if you want a true ride plate and shoe , pull the motor , pull the jet and intake and let us or someone else machine it and do it right theres an enormous amount of coaching, help and support here Your boat will benefit and you will be happier in the long term . Call if we can help you Tom 805 466 4719

Ha Ray  ;) couldn't tell you the last time I was in a bar , I live to work , re Bolt-on shoes , as-cast intakes are with the exception of E-pumps very close to true keel if set in correctly When a ad-a shoe is cast or machined/made  it usually turns out fairly thick in order to be strong which the when bolted and epoxied to a non machined intake makes it pretty deep and aggressive (below keel) this is sometimes overcome in design by closing down the intake opening and back cutting the ad-on device , My Bahner jet had one of these when I bought it years back and would stuff you under the dash on decel I took it off and the boat went from 80 to 83  Just my 02  Tom

The bolt on kits help the ride in rough water, and keep the hull flatter on takeoff, but for a performance effort deal, forget about them. As old as your ride is the epoxy that holds the intake into the hull is sepapating from the hull by now. The epoxy is much harder than the hull and doesn't flex as much, so it separates eventually. The thru bolts are there for safety, so the intake doesn't fall out when the epoxy bond breaks. If it leaks around the intake, it will need to be reset. Does it leak? Put the drain plug in and fill the boat with about 4" of water (lean the boat back and put a brick or two under the rear of the trailer), see if it drips around the intake. If so, just pull the intake and Tom or us can machine it for the proper setup. If you want to go real fast, now would be a good time to set the pump back, and Tom (farther away, but cuter if you care, or us, closer but not as cute- but my wife likes me) and countless others can do the work correctly. Ya might want to do some comparison shopping on price, because that will be all over the map! Shops sell time, the equipment some use will do the same job in half the time or less, than others can. We can do any or all of it, heck most of us shops can. Call around, get prices, and ideas, go with whom you are most comfortable with. Some shops will take in the job and farm out some or all of the machinework and mark it up, others don't have to.  TIMINATOR
