Bought a complete boat for the motor and pump. Noticed that there wasn't any bolts holding the clean out inspection port cover on. Guy said that factory that's how they come. I don't believe that. Looking in side the suction housing it's been filled and painted very nice like a port and polish job. What's the advantage to this the pump wasn't set back on the hull so the port could of been used if wanted to. Is there a advantage to having this done?

Is this what you're talking about?
I bought my boat with a intake that had the clean out welded and smoothed inside. Not sure of the benefits.
No option to install pop off valve.

Nah mine doesn't look like that mine looks like something someone would freak out and say u can't run this its missing bolts. You wouldn't know it was ok until u looked inside the suction housing. Pics later uploaded

I'm curious,is this a Berkeley pump? BTW they offer a hand hole cover that's contoured longer to smooth the area below it to stop turbulence. How do you remove twigs,rope and formerly living things out of your pre-impeller or impeller now or is it running?

It's a Berkeley pump. And that's what I was wondering my self. But at the same time I see people set their pumps back and the hand hole ends up in the transom so how does that work or is it like a race thing only ?

I haven't had to use the clean out on a Berkeley yet. Been playing with jet boats since 1985.

I didn't hear nuttin'.
Put her behind the wheel of a big block powered I/O and she becomes a monster. She won't drive a jet. Probably a good thing.

Hey Mr.jimpen, no difference at all? Well the impeller does produce some "turbulence " itself.lol.Manalive you start see'n what causes turbulence within a jet system that we deal with and it's a miracle they "suck" as good as they do.😂😂.....damn I slay myself😖🔫

So I have another question then being a newbie here. If that's done would it be reasonable to think the veins have been ported? Everything inside the pump is painted a puke green

I believe it makes zero difference. All of the quickest and fastest jet boats in the world use a pop off valve. The pistons that fill the hand hole opening don't fit super nice, not to mention that most are hideously notched for inducer clearance where the inducer has been moved forward.
That being said, I had a hole in my life that I had to fill with this $10,000 billet hand hole cover.
Blending the hand hole cover void with Bondo or Sea Goin' Poxy Putty will eventually crack and fall out. That chunk then goes through the pump. Sometimes you get lucky and it doesn't cause any damage.
People tend to do what is easiest and hope for some gains. The only way you can know if the bowl is detailed AND if it is done correctly is to look inside. Even if done correctly, that doesn't mean that it didn't suck up some rocks at some point.
If you want to do that, I would build up weld on the hand hole cover, machine it to a 4.250" diameter, and blend the weld to the inside surface of the suction housing.
Roy Miersch, PPP, makes a nice fitting hand hole cover for Berkeley and Dominator pumps.
I don't recommend welding the suction housing, the heat will warp the thrust bearing and wear ring size and alignment.

The green would be the zinc primer they used from the factory.
Most likely stock.
