Title: Crazy Pump Mount, Yikes ??
Post by: 2Bing-guy on May 29, 2008, 04:51:42 PM
Hi Guys, been a lurker here for awhile, used to be a boat mech in the way back time and I am thinking about getting a new jet toy.  I found this rig, a 91 baja W 454 some mods, dart heads, headers, guys says it dynoed at 430, big whoop.  Anyway the boat is very clean aside from  this crazy pump mount.  You can tell they yanked a IO out and put this dominator on. Any input on this? anyone seen this done before?  Should I even go drive the thing and see how it runs out or say screw it, ie: nightmare in the making. They guy wants 10K.[attachimg=#]

thats what alot of the guys here do to the boat. It is further out then the stock position, known also a "set back pump"

I have seen it done cleaner by JBP

Check the fiberglass work that has been done to set the intake etc. I would take it for a ride check for leaks etc. Could have potential take it for a spin. Does it have a small block?? If it does then pass a boat that big with a jet will suck. Any big block built tight with dart heads should have a little more HP especially if he spent the $$$ to dyno it.

nevermind the smallblock part I just read it has a 454

My bud sent me the pics of the boat, I havent seen it in person, "2nd hand bud info", maybe its a diesel.  Anyway from what I saw in the pics it looked like a former IO hacked up some to take a pump, you guys think a setback.  That would be better I guess as I suppose the bottoms are differnt from IO to Jet given feed water issues etc.  I looked at some old baja info and didnt find any jets available from the OE.  Maybe Ill have to go look at it, Im curious about how the mount was done, scab job etc.

Pumps traditionally have a big square hole cut out to accomidate the square transome covers . When you move the pump out as far as he did (creating better stability is why it's done) the big square hole has to get covered somehow and thats how its done .

In the mid 90's I worked for a dealer that sold Baja Boats.  Baja made a good hull but by that time they didn't do any jets that I know of.

For 10k you should be able to find a nicer older jet boat or V-drive that doesn't look like it has been hacked.

Welcome to the site  ;D

A set back pump is a good thing, but the height of the  pump in relation to the keel looks way to high or is it just me????

With the lowered the price, he could drive out and tow it back and still be at 10K.

That version of the Dominator pump is supposed to be a really good version.

Does it have a pump brace on the inside of the boat? To hold the intake down. When they are set back there is more force applied to the intake because of the additional leverage created by the greater amount of pump sticking out of the boat. If it doesn't, then this is probably the cause of the cracks around the intake on the bottom of the boat. ;)

Here's a picture of a pump brace.
