i have a place diverter question. i have a '78 Nordic 20', with a Berkely 12JCA pump. i am running speedwise, in the mid 70's. but she runs like shit in the rough water. i want to put a place diverter on it. my uncle race drag boats in the mid 80's and tells me they dont do anything at all. now, i know he knows a little about jets, he was world champion a couple years running, in the Unblown Gas Jet class in the NJBA. but he hasnt been around the sport for some 10 years.he is telling me to make my cav plates adjustible like on a flat bottom, with either the 2 peddals or the shifter set up. that is alot of work and personally i thing it looks like crap. is the diverter a waste of my money, or is it really effective at trimming out for rough water, and holeshots?

A diverter does a lot for the boats handling....even larger boats like yours.

They don't generally drag race in rough water/chop. A Place Diverter will help smooth out the chop. Cav plates do a lot as well, even smaller cav plates help a lot. I think cav plates on a jet look like sh!t (also). I had very small cav plates/swim steps on my Miller and that thing went through chop extremely well w/o a diverter. They weren't adjustable at the driver's seat so that is all they were good for, actually they were also real good at slowing the boat down too.
IMO optimum is a Diverter with small cav plates, if you're going to a spot known for chop you can adjust the plates prior and the same for going to a spot known for smooth sailing/glass. For example if you go to Havasu adjust it for chop, go to Martinez and adjust it for speed/glass.

I have a 20' Advantage, which is a little shallower than your Nordic, and the diverder difenently helped with the ride attitude. But the pump would stiil cavitate in mild chop. It wasn't until Harry added the ride plate and shoe that I could leave my foot in it. In my case the plate and shoe is what made my boat feel solid. Good Luck

the boat has small cav plates on it, they are about 12'' long, only about 8'' sticks out the back, with 3 turnbuckles on each plate. the boat is pretty quick, great acceleration, and top speed is about 77 on gps. but it runs like shit in the rough water. my uncle told me that the plates were originally set up to run smooth at 32 mph, for skiing. i am afraid that if i adjust the plates down it will really affect my top speed. we almost always run up river from havasu, so its half and half, rough and smooth water

It will, but it will also calm that rough water a lot.
