Considering Dominator rebuild
« on: March 26, 2019, 05:45:15 PM »
I'm considering having my Dominator jet rebuilt or freshened up.  It's on an 01 Commander 21 foot open bow and I would assume it's never been rebuilt, but I don't know(not original owner of boat).   The boat uses a lot of fuel per day and it takes a long time to get up on plane when the boat is loaded with bodies.  I can't say for sure it is cavitating???   The boat has ran fine for the 2+ years I've owned it, but I suspect the pump might be worn and/or cavitating.

Is it best to rebuild a jet pre-emptively as a maintenance item and before it's unquestionably worn out,,,,, or wiser to keep running it til it runs no more?

For anyone who's had their jet rebuilt, what did it cost approximately?  What all did you have done?  Thanks.

Absolutely build it now.

A new impeller and wear ring with make a huge difference. I suspect the tolerance in the pump you could throw a cow through.

have kits with or without new impellers.

Tight tolerances are the key to performance and efficiency.

Easy to do. I do my own.

Thank you.   What did it run you doing the job yourself?   I think my type of pump has to be done in the boat.   Is that the type of rebuild you did yourself?

I will look up those 2 recommendations and see where they're at.   Thanks.

Thank you.   That is a good place to start from.  I think my pump has to be done in the boat as I've been told the main part of the pump (suction housing) can't be removed from the boat.   Did you add an inducer impeller when it was rebuilt?   Trying to decide about dropping the extra coin for that.

Dan'l, did you go with an inducer as well?   Is it easy to do for anyone with mechanical knowledge, or easy for you from prior experience?   I suppose I could tackle it myself...at least everything but the machine work.    I looked up your 2 recommendations, and unfortunately they are both too far away.

That's where I'd go for parts.
No inducer in my pump, just a American Turbine AA impeller.

The machine work is in the wear ring to impeller. Buying new, its already done.

New bearing up front, needs to be pressed off and on.

The rest is a few seals and gaskets.

Berkeley specs out radial clearance as  .025", that's .0125 per side. Mine was at .012". The old wear ring to impeller was at .059" a side, or .120 total.

The pump was done 5 years before I did it. And is coming apart this spring, again.

C.P. Performance has a few videos you can watch to see how it's done

Take it to gs marine in corona.  Rebuild and put a inducer in it. Helps with hole shot.  Also need a place diverter.  Ride plate & droop is nice also.    Will wake that boat up.  And jets use fuel. No way around that.

Thanks Dan'l!

Thanks Nordicjet..... I had forgotten about GS, thanks for the referral.

The boat already has a place diverter, so I'm good there.  The boat does get on a plane, but it just doesn't do it like my old 18' jet boat did. There is a definite lag in getting this 21 up on plane, but obviously it's a bigger boat. Nothing plugging the intake suction, I think I'm just dealing with an 18 year old jet that is worn.  Same logic applies to the fuel usage.   I'm just comparing to our old, family 18' jet that I grew up in at the river.  There is a plate behind the transom and below the jet.   This Dominator I think is called an E pump, the whole thing is outside the boat hull.

On the diverter subject, the boat does tend to porpoise when the diverter is kicked up, and boat fully loaded or higher speed is not maintained. I've read other people here and other boat forums have the same issue. Supposedly a lack of HP to keep the boat "up" is the cause of this. Lowering the diverter immediately corrects the porpoising.
