How much pressure should it take to turn the shaft of a berk, free spinning?
It seems it's taking quite a bit of strength to turn the shaft in my project Eliminator... Every other jet i've played with seems to turn quite easily, but this one is pretty tight. It moves, just not as loose as i'm used to. There's no grinding, and the shaft looks clean... eg. no debris.
Is this a sign of bearing issues, or do I need to work out more?

Have you checked the oil in the bowl and/or added grease to the front bearing?

I just rebuilt my pump and according to the guys at Berkeley, the packing gland is tightened against the packing until there is some tension on the shaft. Mine is tighter than just free spinning but I can still turn it by hand. The bowl is full of oil.

Grease yes, I'll check the bowl oil... 80WT right?

I just rebuilt my pump and according to the guys at Berkeley, the packing gland is tightened against the packing until there is some tension on the shaft. Mine is tighter than just free spinning but I can still turn it by hand. The bowl is full of oil.
Once you get it on the boat and running you want to adjust it so that it leaks 1 - 2 drops per minute. The rope seal water lubricates so if you have it too tight, it won't get any water in there, thus no lubrication.
