Title: Help w/ driveline

I'm so confused I've read so much on angles and heard 10 different opinions and I'm still not quite 100% understanding. If someone can help me out I could haul the boat to you if you can help me lift it and set it back in correctly.  In this picture the protractor is reading 13 degrees.

That should be fine. A little steep but ok. Typically you only want a few degrees to allow the needle bearings in the u-joint to rotate which will lube them. You may have to change u-joints every season. Im not sure of your motor mount set up, but if you have a rail kit its an easy fix. If you have a 4 point mount it may or maynot be easy to change. I would run it if it was me. Offroad trucks run way more angle than that, and so do 4x4 fords.

Try and keep your pump shaft and crank shaft parallel with u-joint at 1/2-3 degrees. Read alot on this subject.. Mine is at roughly 2. I have a 4 point and used nylon to space the hole in stringer to get it correct.

well you are farther than i hoped,
anyway, get the u-joint to look straight as you can make it, you can take some wood and put it under the motor to help stabilize it from moving around while it's hanging from the cherry picker. then put the angle finder on it. what kind of mount system are you using?and yes 1-3* from the pump is what you are looking for.

yes the motor is how you get the angle, the motor needs to be 1-3* different than the pump shaft.
level the boat by putting the angle finder on the stingers front to back, then put a straight edge across the stringers to get level that way. then put the angle finder on the bowl to find out what angle the pump is set in at, should be 4* then set motor to desired degree's

Hope this gets you to understand...
Motor (crank) and pump shaft parallel... Basically motor (crank) will be higher than pump shaft a tad and the angle will be the driveline connecting the two.

The correct motor to drive shaft alignment should be the same in each joint.

The only reason you need any angle at all is for keeping a rotational load on the cross joints and to rotate the needles in the joints for lubrication purposes.

The best method I have used is to get the motor lined up dead nuts to the pump shaft, then raise all for motor mounts by 1/4". You can also raise just the front, but this gets tricky because the "flex" needs to be in the middle of the drive line, this is stupid difficult and seldom done correctly.

well I reset the motor and now the angle off the H block is at 8 degrees. I couldn't get it any more straight because the feet on the mounts were bottoming out. I even ground some out of the feet to get extra clearance. Is this okay ?

8* is too much
It has to be 'virtually' straight, 1.5*-2*
I used a camera to take side view pics above the stringer to 'see' where I was at.

X2, 8 degrees is too extreme.

You really want to get the final number to zero and have a max angle on either joint of 3 degrees.

Think of it like this, you are bending the HP, the smallest amount possible while still having roller bearing movement is what you are looking for.

I think it comes down to the fact that I'm going to need help on this. Now I have way to many holes in my stringers and still don't have it done right.

Just make sure your crankshaft to pump shaft are parallel. I set my hull up slightly off trailer with jack stands to control movement. Used a cheapo angle finder from harbor freight. Set it on pump shaft, then motor to get that dialed. If you have a 4 point you should be able to get it to zero at parallel.  I had to grind two small spots on my bell where the bolt through grate is to get mine to zero out.  As I said before 1/2-3 is prime...but if you close to 3 your fine.

Kinda, you don't wanna do QUITE that, set them up as parallel, then drop or raise the engine to give a few degree's of deflection. You NEED that deflection to force all the bearings under the caps to rotate fully and last nearly forever.

In other words, keep the shaft centerlines parallel, crank and pump shaft, but ones gotta be lower than the other.  ;)

Thats exactly what i said...crankshaft and pump shaft must be parallel with a 1/2-3 degree driveline. If you drawl a straight line from pump shaft it will never cross the crankshaft line...parallel. I set mine straight then moved up to give the drive 2...read my earlier post.
Just so you understand the word parallel...  ( =  ) can you see the two lines.

Will I have issues if the pump shaft and the crank are not completely square with each other? The reason that it's not square is because when I put the engine in, I measured from the inside of the stringers to the center of the crank. Little did I know the stringers aren't perfectly centered in the hull.

You might get premature bearing wear or light vibration.... For the most part try an keep the angle at 3 or less. Should be okay but if it were me, I would spend the time to make it right.

Ok you convinced me haha. I want everything to be done the right way and I knew that squaring it up would be the correct way. Thanks for your input. Even though your screen name is your mom your words sound like what my dad would say. Haha. Thanks again.
