I am currently running a 396 with about 400+ HP with Aa impeller. What would I gain or lose with a, a/b, or b? Not a drag boat just a nice lake boat wanting to go a little faster

The question you pose is too open ended.
Personally I feel an AA is too tall for a 396.
What rpm does it run at now? What hull? Where does the motor make the assumed 400 ponies? What do you do with the boat?
If you cut the impeller down, about the only thing I guarantee you will gain is some rpm. That being said if you can make another 50 or more hp at the new rpm, you might see a couple more miles an hour.
If you are thinking you will pick up several miles an hour by cutting the impeller, I am afraid that you will be extremely disappointed.
Can you describe your set up a little more?
Hull weight, where are the tanks? What ignition, carburetor(s)?
Do you have a Place Diveter, loader, shoe, ride plate?
And the most important question, how thick is your wallet?

the hull weight empty is 400. Motor is 40 over. Dual plane edelbrock and 600 carb. No place diverter but am currently on the hunt for one. Has a shoe. Had a split bowl and ride plate but were changed at some point before I got it. Now has JC bowl. And my wallet . . . . . . . . . .

Personally I would not mess with the impeller.
You didn't say what rpm she runs, but the best bang for the buck is going to be a Place Diveter. The very next thing in line is an intake and carburetor.
You should be at the bare minimum at 750cfm, preferably mechanical secondary.
If it "had" a ride plate, does it still have a shoe? A shoe without a plate will smack performance right in the face.
Cool boat. Those hulls can take more hp than most people can afford to build.

Also too,I would consider a bowl and droop when funds permit.
See how easy it is for me to spend your money?

I was thinking about swapping out the 396 for a 454 and buy a place diverter. It does have a shoe and threaded holes for ride plate

You can make a ride plate yourself. Pretty straight forward.
If you have a running 396, I would tweak the rest of the boat before doing a swap. Get it working properly then add some hp. Everything you bolt to a 396 will swap to the 454.
But I'm weird that way.

If it was yours what would you do?

Short list really.
JG bowl, ride plate set flat, short droop, Place Diverter, Victor Jr.intake with an 850dp either Holley or a Quick Fuel, plate loader set about 1/8" below the keel and see where I ended up. From there, add 300 hp and play with impellers.

Ride plate flat with keel? And do you know where I can find bowl and place diverter?

I have a tarantula intake with 2 inch super sucker spacer that I need to install but waiting for carb

Ride plate flat with keel? And do you know where I can find bowl and place diverter?
Maybe I can explain my reasoning.
Ride plate flat to the keel only because this is a hydro style hull.
The way this boat would work if it were an actual v drive would be three points of contact. Prop, and two sponson tails. A jet can't do that. So the ride plate will literally be the tail contact.
What works on a vee hull or a tunnel will literally not work on this hull. Which is why they are so power hungry.
The Place Diverter will also act as an extended point of contact, BTW you need the later style not an early.
The Diverter will basically be used to fine tune the amount of lift, virtually eliminating the need to screw around with angle spacers on the nozzle.
These boats are tricky to get to work.
Hope that helps explain some of my comments.
If anyone has anything to add, would love to hear it.
I have only seen about three of these boats up close and personal, only one of them worked worth a Damn.

Supposedly tom was the owner when it was v drive then he sold it to someone in socal they converted it to jet then ended up in Alabama and I traveled from Virginia to Alabama to get it. BTW I got it dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt cheap and it was turn key so I ain't complaining not one bit. Thanks for your input. You are a knowledgeable person when it comes to these things,....

I kinda wish it was still vdrive lol
