impeller?
« on: July 17, 2007, 02:36:23 PM »
ive got a 23ft hawaiian that is fairly heavy, just put a fresh 460 in with a wj jaccuzi jet.
the engine runs great but it takes over 4000 rpm to plain out and to keep it going, seems rather excessive cause im only going about 30 mph at the most.

i am new to jets and am not sure what to expect, is there a different impellor that i should use?
the engine does not bog down at all and will rev over red line in i let it.

thanks

A diverter will help you out (doesn't sound like you have one on there).
I don't think it would be the impeller but will let others in-the-know address that.

If the pump has not been rebuit in a while it could be the impeller or wear rings. Know more about Berkeleys than Jacuzzi's. My last boat would tach about 5000 RPM before pulling a skier out of the water. Had the pump rebuilt and WOW! What a difference. My current boat has a Place Diverter on a Berkeley and that also made a huge difference. Have the pump looked at first before you spend $$$$ on a diverter that might not help if you have worn out pump.

Putting the diverter in the down position will force the water stream down into the water and lower the bower (also good for pulling up skier); once leveled off you should be able to bring the diverter level and it should maintain the plain; putting the diverter up will raise the bow and generate the jet-unique rooster tail.

You can also throw up a rooster tail to harrass your skier like flytime did to me  :-[

I have a similar problem and I think Flytime is on the right track. If the clearances are too loose , water will blow past the wear ring thus producing an already sluggish boat to be even more so . Have it looked at . I think all you might need is a new wearing to match your impellor and have it all clearanced properly . Thats what is up in my sinario , and yours sounds pretty close . It'll be a few bucks but after that it should last a very long time if taken care of . Keep us posted so we can learn something .  ;)

Pointing the bow down will make the hull plain slower and require more RPM to get it to plain...

If the boat isn't plaining off then the stern is down and the bow is up; why wouldn't diverting the water down, thus bringing the bow down, plain the boat?

Because pointing the bow down puts more of the hull in the water creating more drag than if the bow were up.

The OE wear rings are actually Plastic (lexan) and very inexpensive All other WJ pieces are readily available as well . There are also lots of other options fo you as well  such as Energizer Kits etc.  Post up you questions and progress  Happy to help if we can   Tom

Hey Tom, my Miller has a WJ and I've noticed that the bow is pretty far "down" when I'm on a plain. It plows through the wakes pretty damn good and it tops out around 50-55 mph. Can I put a slight wedge in there (does anyone make one for the WJ?) and get my bow and top speed up a bit or...  ???

I got a friend with a tunnel rammed 460 spreading rumors that my boat's top speed is 40 mph,  ???  :D  I figure getting the bow up just a little bit will be enough to spank his assss.  ;)

1. Ask Mike (the passenger in your boat when my boat beat your boat).  ;)

2. No way in hell did I ever say that to anyone, including you. What I said was "this is me all day" pointing at the tach that showed 4,000 RPM and the speedo that showed about 38 mph, then I hit the gas a little bit and said "there's a little more" and it wen't to 4500 RPM and 45 mph, you've never been in my boat at WOT, you've never been in my boat over 5000 RPM, how do I know? Because I've never been in my boat at WOT and the only time it's been over 5000 RPM is when my boat kicked your boat's assss.   :D

You can take that to the bank brother.  ;)   ;D

Funny assssed sh!t BTW, our little circle of friends, he said that you said that he had said, it's freakin' hillarious, and all of our boats are easily 80 mph boats on this forum or on their trailers, LMFAO!  ;D

Azhwn unfortunately the only real way to check clearance is to pull the jet at least part way down .High rpm vs speed is usually a good indicator however.
Rod re wedges ,yes if the boats running "wet" a wedge could help (could be some other things goin on too ) Less wetted surface = more speed =better spankin party!! Always around for tech and talk ,I don't get in here to post enough (too busy keepin Dunns boat running!! lol)  Tom

Any body heard from Ralph ? trying to get a call back
