I have an opportunity to get a boat that has a 12-JF pump (stock) on it. This is the style with the cleanout port outboard and all the control cables running out the transom below water line starboard side. This boat has the Berk jetovator. Don't know what impeller. Has all the control cables.
Is this pump design/rig OK? What are the pro's and con's? Can I sell the parts off?

Yeh I already been there done that. What's the rig really like? I heard the control cables leak alot at the transom. Anybody have good or bad experience with this model?

If you like the boat, you might consider trading out the "F" pump for a JC or JG and then sell the "F" on eBay. As for leaks, seems to me that you can always find a way to stop them.

Wouldn't it be a lot of work to change a JF to a JC or JG? Because the transom of the boat is built for that style pump only, and there is a big fiberglass insert molded into the boat, fot that pump.

Yeah, pretty much a nightmare, those pumps use a hull insert that requires a whole bunch of fiberglass work to reverse, IMO not worth the effort.
These pumps aren't that bad, most of the time the little boots fail which is what causes the leaks, not to hard to replace and not that expensive, just remember to get some quality hose clamps (I always use the all stainless hose clamps made for silicon hose, they have a smooth band inside and don't cut the boots).
They built a lot of stuff into these pumps and the linkages are a little Hokey, but work fine, one of my freind has a 1980 21' Saber Jet with a 460 and the only mods are a 428 timing lower gear (Ford guys should know why) and a different carb and manifold (Team "G" Stealth and an 850 Double pumper) which we bought at a swap meet, and installed a super simple "stuffer plate", this 21' daycruiser does 65 MPH at I think 5000 RPM, if it turns faster, not by much, and thats through log style exhaust and through transoms, we did change out the ugly aluminum tips and put on the stainless ones with the two piece flapper inside (nice upgrade).

I see that two of you are in NorCal. I'm going to pass on buying the boat with the F-style pump but I thought you might like to hear about it. The deal is the guy selling it is in Grass Valley (near Sac) and he isn't listing it as a boat. He's trying to sell the motor and the boat and trailer come along for the ride. The boat is a 22-24' Tahiti with damage somewhere due to a tree limb falling on it. Also full of pine needles and s---. But the motor is a 454 BBC with Panther logs and valve covers (maybe more). The pump is a Berk 12JF as I said. The trailer is a tandem axle with hyd surge brakes. He's asking $2k but nobody's going for it. If I lived closer I would jump all over this and part it out. I've got a few pics he emailed me - I can forward if you want.
He had it on Craigslist under auto parts but the list has expired. Here is his phone# 916-412-5218 his name is Dave.

Well, Steve. If the price is right and it's something you want to play around with, go for it. I'm sure that if later on you want to change out that pump it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but then what do I know. It looks like the "C" bowl set up on the end of the pump.

Ha Ha Ha, my wife was reading over my shoulder and says "that's nicer than your boat and it has an engine in it already" :mad:, women just don't understand (or maybe they do ::)) Looks like a lot of good parts there ;)

Like I said - I'm OUT. It's too far from where I live and I have too many other things going on :banghead:. GT - was your wife including all the free pine tree needles that come with this boat? (Look around the engine shot in the bilge.)

As has already been mentioned , there is a considerable amount of work required to the hull to convert from an "insert" pump to a conventional(JC/JG style)pump.
It looks like the "C" bowl set up on the end of the pump.
Looks can be decieving. :) While the original casting was probably the same as a JC, the steering nozzle socket area had to be machined differently than the JC in order to work with the oddball steering/trim yoke assembly. It does not have the necessary flats machined into the inside of the socket to allow any other Berkeley nozzle, or diverter(Place or others) to fit. So, basically, the JF bowl only works with the full JF setup and cannot be substituted for a JC without modification.
