You shouldn't be able to turn the shaft, it is connected directly to the engine.
What kind of engine mount system? A 3-point?
Can you gain access to inspect the drive line?

I have a 19' Commander and went through the same thing in June at the river. Is yours a 454 Marine power Sport Pac? If so you will need to pull the motor or pump ( I pulled the motor) due to the u joints being in a bell housing. I got my u joint unit from CP Performance but should have bought it from Tom at Jet Boat Performance. They are about $180.00. I had the motor out / in in about 6 -7 hours not too bad but had to take my back seat out to slide the motor forward. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any additional questions.

Here is a pic

Was it just a u-joint? One of mine went out 2 years ago and sheered the splined end of my pump shaft clean off.

Mine was just the u joint assembly. Broke pump shaft is a bummer!
