In the process of replacing the thrust bearing on a Jacuzzi 12YJ/B - has anyone done this themselves, and is it an easy task? Any info is appreciated. Is it something to save the time and headache and take to a shop or can someone who is mechanically inclined handle?

I've only done the jacuzzi wj pump.
If I remember right, the shaft comes out the front, so pump removal is necessary. Looks like the yj has a mechanical seal, the spring one.
Should be pretty straight forward to replace.
Tom @ jet boat performance would know.
Last Mohican here also has a yj (Golden Eagle) pump too maybe he'll chime in.
Hope this helps.
