Do i need to remove the transom adapter first, to remove the bowl? Or should the bowl come out without removing the adapter?
-
On mine, it was easier to pull the transom adapter then the bowl.
At that point, if you need to replace the impeller, six or eight bolts later the rest of the pump comes out.
So much easier to rebuild it on the bench vs. in the boat.
Why are ya gonna pull the bowl?

Sucked up a rock last trip to river. Removed it but it still has no thrust past 3000 rpms. Impeller seems ok; no major chips or chunks. It will be ok with minor file detail. I suspect there is still something behind impeller
-
Yep, that's what it sounds like.
Once the bowl is off, the trailing edge of the impeller is very important. any chunks out of it will cavitate like crazy.
A 'refresh' of the pump might be in order, while you are there.

I was thinking of replacing the wear ring since im already in there. Is there a procedure or do i just replace it and go?

4 Stainless screws. Sometimes they don't come out. Replace, then shim the front bearing for proper clearance.
Axial is self clearance-ing. Front to Rear is shimmed.

What is the benefit of going with stainless wear ring? Is that also self clearancing? Seems like it wouldnt be. When shimming, do i need a precise amount of endplay, or do i shim to remove endplay?

The WJ wear rings are plastic. stainless wear rings are Berk stuff, as far as I know.

YOU DONT HAVE TO PULL THE COVER , THE BOWL JUST HAS A FAT ORING THAT SEALS UP AGAINST IT. THAT WAY YOU DONT HAVE TO RESEAL THE COVER AGAINST THE TRANSOM

Ok... so whats next? Im trying to get this all apart to inspect the wear ring. I didnt find any other rocks or debris in the bowl. It has end play. When i pushed it all the way forward it sounded like impeller was rubbing metal. Im not sure how forward to push it. I want to just replace the wearing at this point. How does that front bearing coming out? The piece holding the bearing spins but doesnt come off. Any tips would be great!

Ok... impeller is out. A little MAPP gas heat and a puller (gentle) and it came out. Wear ring is, well.... worn. It has a small shoulder in it. Where can i get one locally? Im in Ontario.
