Title: Jacuzzi WJ Problems
Post by: JordanDangerfield on January 17, 2013, 02:11:24 PM
So, I took the boat out to Elsinore this past Saturday. It was freezing balls, but I decided to go anyway. I launched out of La Laguna and she was running great. I get a little past Cranes and notice a vibration so I slow down to an idle. I see water spinning off the impeller shaft. I kill the motor, take a look, and notice a bunch of grease pushed out where the impeller shaft comes out. I figure it's the rope packing or tail shaft bearing. I fire the motor back up to limp back to the launch ramp, the temp immediately spikes, and no water is being dumped over board. I shut the motor down as soon as I notice no water flowing.

After pulling the boat out of the water I didn't see anything suspicious in the intake grate and the impeller looked fine.

Are the problems of the water intake being clogged and the seal at the front of the pump related? Both problems happened at the same time. Did I suck up a duck? Ha. My jet pump jargon is not up to par so excuse me if I am calling parts by the wrong name. Below are a couple pics.

Any help is appreciated!

The vibration and lack of water flow are signs of something stuck in the impeller (rocks, ropes, fish, ducks...).

I've never had the grease push out of the forward bearing housing like that, so I'm not going to make any guesses about that.

not sure if something is clogged or not but usually when you get something really hot grease turns to a liquid. so that is prob why you have it everywhere now.

WJ's dont have a rope seal, but a double 'grease' type seal. Any water coming in the boat thru the shaft seal prolly means the bearing is toast.
Check U-joints closely, seen a bad vibration from them.

Second pic: lower left- water line unhooked? Was this for testing?

I unhooked the water line after I got home.

Based on the vibration and water coming through the seal it sounds like it's the bearing. I'll start researching what it's going to take to replace that. How do I get into the part of the pump where the water inlet is? I guess unbolt the diverter and take a look? If you guys have any links to jacuzzi resources, please post them up.

Thanks!

Pull the transom adapter, then the bowl. then the impeller next, water inlet is by the wear ring. this all has to be done anyway if the bearing needs to be replaced. then unbolt the pump from intake, pull the 4 bolts for the bearing housing, then the front seal plate, and the bearing stays on the shaft, then needs to be pressed off. not as tough as it looks. I've still got all of the NAMJ WJ tech manual if needed, typewritten 10/77

Great write up and documentation!

I ended up taking the boat to Precision Marine to have the pump checked out and got bad news.  Apparently when the bearing gave out the impeller moved forward, destroying the wear ring, and grinding on the suction housing.  The suction housing and impeller are now toast.  So now, what are my options without dropping a couple grand into this boat?  The guy says he might be able to repair it, but it's going to be expensive..

See if you can find a another rebuildable pump before you have him start repairing what you have.  Craigslist and all the boating sites with classifieds will be your best bet.

Post some pics of the carnage. The wear ring in a WJ  is plastic of some sort. From what I remember, the impeller would need to go forward 3/8" to 1/2" to get into the suction housing. In the 2nd pic, It doesnt look like the bearing housing was shimmed at all, so there should be a huge gap between the impeller and the wear ring.

Looks to me, and Crewcheif I think nailed it, I'd bet someone over-greased the fitting blowing out the seal to cause all that.

As Daniel said though, I'd also find it hard to beleive this would cause the suction housing to be toast. They have a nylon "interference" ring well before the wear ring and it would take a TON of neglect to wear through that AND the wear ring even get remotely even close to the suction housing.

Methinks someone is trying to make a few extra bucks in this economy off you, IMHO.

Finding out how much it's going to cost for someone else to work on it has given me a lot of motivation to take on this project myself.  First order of business is getting the boat back and tearing into the pump.  I'll post pics of the carnage as soon as I can dig into her.

Ray, I had just launched the boat so I was taking an easy lap around Elsinore.  As soon as I noticed the vibration I shut the motor down.  I'm hoping I caught it quickly enough that I didn't ruin the housing.  Like you said it takes some serious neglect to F that much stuff up.

I appreciate all the help and advice!

I don't if you've gone by there yet, but I'm picking the boat up today.
