Title: Jet is growling like a hung up starter
Post by: Rodbender on May 27, 2008, 11:03:17 AM
He guys...... I am a new member and i have a few questions about my dominator. I just picked up this boat and i started it on the trailer (about 30 seconds) and i got a nasty growl like the starter was hung up. i noticed when i put it in the water about 2000 rpm, i get the same growl but I can feel it more than hear it. Also, as i launched it took about a minute before I had fwd or rev. The boat has a mild 460 and a Dom with a SS A-B imp.

Any thoughts????????????

your pump is going bad....needs to be rebuilt. Give tom at jet boat performance a call (www.jetboatperformance.com)

It comes and goes, almost like the wear ring is spinning in the housing but only periodically. I took the boat out of the water and started it to clear the water and i rapped it once. When i did, thats when i noticed the growl. I shut it down, then restarted and the noise was gone. It is definately not the motor, I am sure it is the jet.

I think cj222 means the bearing in the pump. Have you greased the bearing in the pump. Dominators I think have a grease zerk on the side??

It could be the bushing at the other end of the shaft . When that bushing goes , the impellor will start to wobble inside the wear ring causing a growling sound . At least mine did . I've heard SS impellors are renowned for doing this .

I'd say rebuild the whole entire pump. If you buy the Berkeley pump tool set it's super easy to rebuild yourself.

If the bushings are worn then you could only imagine what the rest of the pump looks like . I have lots of other things I can do with $400 . Besides , it's probably a good idea to have a shop put the impellor and shaft on a lathe for good measure .
