If you don't know the history of the pump (more than a few years since last overhauled) I would recommend pull it out and have it checked.

Depending on what pump it is a seal/bearing kit will run $250-$350.  If you do the removal and installation the cost for a bench overhaul should not be out of line.

That way you know it's fresh

X2, This would be the best time to go through the pump since it's easy to get to.  If you put that engine in telling yourself that you will come back to it you're just we all know it doesn't happen.  I rebuilt mine recently and it was pretty easy, as long as you have some tools everyone here can help you along.

Beyond the obvious dings dents and other phyical damage visable thru the clean out or intake  the jet should turn freely with little resistance and/or  noises , unless your willing to dissassemble the jet , theres not much to see call if you need help Tom
