Berkeley Jet Problems
« on: June 18, 2013, 12:21:04 AM »
Hey Guys,

I have an 18' Tahiti with a built 454 in it. Pump is a 12jg. Ive owned a couple jet boats in the past, they all had different pumps on the but for some reason this one decelerates hard when I let off the gas. It almost feels like the reverse flap is half way down when I going forward but I know its not. It also seems like its hard for it to accelerate. I have to give it 3,200 rpms for it to plane out. I looked underneath and it doesnt have a loader scoop...any idea of what might be causing the problem?

It's the boat, not the pump.  Sounds normal.

Probably. But for chits and giggles might wanna double check your control handle, cable, reverse bucket, etc just to make absolutely sure it's not putting itself into "reverse". Very dangerous (I speak from experience on THAT one.....)

Otherwise, yeah, as Pat said, sounds like just the differences in the hulls. IE my "Moo" (A Sleekcraft Rebel) would almost stop on her own once you lifted. My "Pickle" ( A Sleekcraft SST/Streaker hybrid) would not! MANY times had to grab reverse and stab the throttle to get that boat to stop or slow down......

Equipped almost identically, it was the hull differences that can be the only reason for this.

I have same hull and pump on mine also.  I get the same issue on taking off.  I thought maybe it might be the pump and soon ready to have it gone through.  It does sound like it is the way the hull is. Once I'm on top no issues.  I was going to write about the same thing.  I guess my answers I had was just answer.  My brother had a Kona that did almost the same thing.  Both hulls are not much different.  Thanks for the info guys

Do you get a bad vibration in your steering wheel once you plane out?
