hi all, ive got a berkeley 12JG in my river boat. I just went on a 2 day trip with it, before i left i checked and filled the bowl with oil. when i got back home i re-checked the oil and it was empty,no water or oil... ive had the seal fail before and the bowl fills with water and it get milky, get a new seal and new oil,its a quick fix but im stumped on this one...WHERES THE OIL GOING???? no oil stains in my driveway under the pump...no water in my bowl so the seal must be good....any idea's???

The oil is going in the river...LOL..
There are a few potential issues.
The seals are the weak link, but not the only possible leaker.....You need to check the rear plug also....I actually use a cutter seal designed for outboard motors that has a sharp lip around the face of the seal, they are stupid strong and wont get destroyed by fishing line or the occasional mis-thrown ski rope... :sly:
You can pressurize the housing and listen for the leak, don't go higher than about 5 PSI....

thx GT JETS, ive got a double lip seal in there and i think its sealing because i had no milky water oil mix in there, but maybe not. the rear plug is there but maybe its loose..i guess ill have to take it apart and have a look

The only problem I have with grease is the pump never really gets warm enough to drop out the oil, it does seem to work though....I always wanted to get a roller bearing to work in there...Too much work, not enough time, not a big gain.... :-\
I bought some Torrington caged needle bearings several years ago (more like 15) and just could never muster up the required bucket of ambition...

I'm a little confused but where the he'll do you put oil in the pump? I have never done that just grease on the bearing in the front. I have an "e" pump

You have two plugs on the outside of your bowl....Take them both out and dump your oil in one side till it flows out the other. Do this before you take it out for the weekend. If you have a jetovator and your bowl is turned, fill slowly with just the top one off. I put a zerk in one side and do the same back and forth then with the plug in on one side to make sure its getting the the spot needed...Put plugs back in and enjoy.

took the pump apart and found that the seal had failed...thx 4 the help

what if your bowl is twisted for jetovator? how do i know how much oil to put in?

Dunno, I wondered about that awhile back. Here's what I thought but theres bound to be an easier and simpler solution.
It would seem to me the upper plug is at about the same height anyway, so just pull the upper one, pull the lower one with the bottle of 90 wgt ready. most have a tapered "tube of caulk" like nipple on them, jam that in the lower hole and squeeze the bottle til it runs out the top one. Plug it, then quickly pull the bottle and plug the other one. ???
Moo's is a JE like beav's, and it has grease fittings in it.........I've just been putting grease in every now and again, no oil has ever come out the other fitting when i removed it doing it, only grease??? is there a particular grease I should be using?

My JF uses about a 1/2 cup each outing. I guess this winter I should look into a rebuild kit from Tom. Anyone interested in helping me do the rebuild here in AZ?
This would be a new one for me to tackle and I wouldnt mind someone with soem experience helping me screw it up. ;)
