Okay, so my problem right now is if I'm holding it open running ~4800-4900 rpms it will stay clean and strong for 5-6 seconds and then either backfire or if I keep holding it, just shut down completely. To restart it, I have to primer it (manual fuel pump) with a few pumps and then it'll fire right back up. I was thinking the fuel pump could be going out because of the shut down, but would that also cause it to backfire?

Did it fire out the carb or exhaust? Your pump might not be rated at a good enough gph. Also check for collapsed lines or junk in tank. Good way to check is run a line off pump into small gas can then go wot... Should eliminate some areas. I have a manual pump and put a stainless spring in the line where a tight curve is to stop a collapse. I also upgraded to a 3/8 npt water/fuel Sep giving me a 1/2 fuel line to pump.

Might not have enough fuel pressure and your running the carb bowls out of gas, a lean pop and it done.
Just a stab in the dark.
If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge at the carb, get one on there and have someone keep an eye on it.
Could also be too much pressure and you are flooding it, but I doubt it.
