I think . Well it was a fresh pump almost two years ago and after swapping it into a bigger and heavier boat I noticed a pretty big drop in MPH in my hallett 210 . I know it's not a hot rod to begin with but I'd driven it enough to know how it was supposed the accelerate . I took a closer look at the impellor one day through the intake and it looks like the entire shaft moved forward and the impellor was basically ate it's self over the wear ring .
I'm thinking since the pump originally came with a shoulderless wear ring and then went back together with a shouldered wear ring (pushing the impellor back ) it made it's way forward again thus mashing the fockin impellor against the wear ring . I'm wondering if its possible to machine the impellor to clear the wear ring (it's aluminum) . I really need to get this handled .

Beerjet, when the change was made to the shouldered wear ring, the impeller needed to be shimmed rearward to accommodate the shoulder as well as to establish the correct impeller-to-wear ring clearance of .025-.035". If this was not done the impeller damage probably started as soon as the pump was first run. The second cause of the damage you describe, if the impeller was properly installed, is a thrust bearing that has failed. This allows both the impeller and shaft to move forward together.
You will need a new wear ring if contact has been made with the impeller. I would suggest replacing the impeller. To reuse it will require machining the leading edge as well as, most likely, the rear shoulder of the wear ring area(damage you aren't likely to see until the impeller is removed. A new aluminum impeller is not that expensive. Check with CP Performance for price on Berkeley brand impellers and RexMarine for Legend and American Turbine brand replacements for Berk.You might also contact Duane @ Hi-Tech Performance to see if he has any reconditioned impellers available.

Thanks oldsquirt, I have been told that option number 2 is prbably what happened by two others who are very knowlegable as well . The shouldered wear ring was used as a result of a time crunch . The pump was never submerged to my knowlege . I do not think the lip was removed on the isolater . At the time I knew absolutely nothing about pumps and apparently still have lots to learn 4 years later . The pump was origanally in the 18'er that is in my sig line and never noticed any performance change until I put it in the bigger , heavier hallett 210 . Thats when I started to scratch my head and wondered where the performance went . I have the old pump that I took out of the hallett in the begining . That one has a broken wear ring in it and a stainless impellor so I'll probably just have that one rebuilt . I swear . You guys who know your shit , always hit the nail on the head .

Nothing wrong with using a shouldered wear ring, especially if the suction housing had been "kissed" by an impeller previously. You do need to trim the lip off of the liner though, to allow the shoulder to fit up against the suction housing shoulder. I used one recently in a JE "insert" style pump for a friend. The original suction had been destroyed as a result of a failed thrust bearing. Figured the shouldered wear ring would be easier to "sacrifice" than another suction housing. I can't count on this person to properly maintain the pump, and I dont want to have to remove another insert pump......ever :)

This is where I stand today . I had some people over for a bbq this weekend and we decided now would be as good a time as any to tear into it . I want to thank "Oldsquirt" for all of his advise and knowlege , as well as " Hallett Dave " It is just a shame I'm just now getting around to getting this done . My pump guy has kind of been waiting for the bowl to get to him but I'm sure it aint done yet so hopefully this week it'll be in and done .

This is the pump in question , I had a little left over motivation so I tore it down and I will say that I was vey close to a huge disaster .

I bolted my puller up and pushed the shaft through . Dont forget about these little things . The rope seals looked real good . Maybe a scosh too tight , maybe not .

And now for the bad news , The impellor is absolutly no good . As a matter of act there are some places where the wear ring had worn clean through to the inside of the impellor .

Practically all the way around there is a groove and in some places it's worn through . I used to flat foot this thing and it would hook up real good :o ??? I check out the bearing and it looked to be in good shape . No play in it what so ever . I did find the impellor to have a slight rattle on the shaft which I'm sure didnt help my situation . I cant imagine how this got over looked . Luckily I've gotten into the habit of checking my other pump after every trip out .
I am not a proffesional ! This is by no means meant to be taken as instructions on how to work on your pump. There are plenty of proffessionals out there who are willing to give great and proffessional advise !

That sucks on the impellar the edges didn't look all that bad on the intake side

I got a little baby girl who is all over me so I gotta keep a little cleaner than even I'd like to be .
Check out the edges in pic 7 and 8 . Its actually worse in person .
I have not gotten the stuff for my gel yet . Do any stores carry it , so I can drive by and pick it up .

Try Gelgloss. It comes in a pick bottle(your favorite color). I got mine at Campingworld. Try there or any other RV store.

I'm gonna pick a new impellor , one day ..... An aluminum one and try my hand at doin it on my own . If anyone has one in good shape , let me know .
