Title: Need to paint/coat my pump housing.......what should I use or would you use?
Post by: chrisx2 on March 04, 2014, 02:30:15 PM
Folks, I am taking my JE housing down to get it blasted clean, then coated/painted.  What I'd like to inquire is, what do you recommend painting/coating it with?  Brand, # of coats, type of primer, etc, etc.  What do you think or recommend on this?

I think powder coating is likely the best way to go, if your going to paint it
I was told to use etching primer and appliance paint
Hope that helps

Powder coat is the best way to go about it. But if you want to paint it you can, just make sure you prep the pump right and spray away.

Appliance epoxy in a can would be your best choice for an at home job, can be found at depot or lowes. Of course prep is always the most important thing to any paint job. Powder is definitely the way to go though....

+1 for powder coat.  Hard anodize would also be a great choice.  Both if you are not on a budget.  Nothing will be as durable or look good as long as powder coat.

Precautions with powder coat.  You don’t want to blast or coat the entire pump.  Pay particularly attention to the machined surfaces for the thrust bearing, all mating surfaces, especially the register for the bowl to suction and the thrust bearing cap mating surfaces.

Blasting these areas will loosen up the fitment between the components and could cause issues upon reassembly.  Coating these areas could prevent the components from fitting together as the coating (depending on color) can add 1/64” to 1/32” thickness to each surface.  Diverter and nozzle pin bores and ball sockets can also cause drama.

If you go the powder coat route, make sure your coater is familiar with coating jet pumps.

Cheers,

Joe

I get killer deals on powder coat and ceramic coating... but I just redid my pump with appliance epoxy (got it for free lol) and came out like brand new. And cheap and easy to touch up if need be.

I used appliance on the intake.  I didn't want to pull it out and had powder on the rest... good match.

Thank you folks for all your knowledgeable input here, I do appreciate it.  Another quick question, were the original Berks enamel, epoxy, powder coated, ????
The bowl is at the media blaster in town now, when he calls me I'll get to clean up the inner vane work with a port/polish kit, the casting is a little roughly done, just want to smooth the vane to bowl transitions a little. Then I'll paint or coat it.
