Title: new to jet boats............
Post by: Jason1978nordic on April 21, 2008, 07:08:40 PM
I have questions regarding jet pumps namely a berkeley jc-a I have a 1978 nordic it has a new aluminum headed 460 with what I am hoping to be about 550 hp my question is can I hurt this pump I know nothing about it and information where I live is hard to come by.I just spent a ton of money and dont want to hurt anything as I said I am new to boating any info about these pumps would really help me thanks...............let me add specific the motor is a 460 .030 with forged flattops, truck rods with bolts and an eagle crank, the heads are trickflow a460 with mild work and 75 cc chambers,a comp cams 292 hydraulic cam roller rockers ,tunnel ram intake with two 450 holleys all ports matched bassett over the transom headers msd ignition this is my first bbf, the motor that was in it dropped a valve after two times out so I dont have much to compare to the aluminum heads were a great weight savings also,so when I hammer the throttle from slow or stop it will just spin the pump is this normal? What can I do to stop this it has an a impeller suppossedly

I read you should use brass or stainless impellers for anything over 500 hp, but I am far from an expert.

Jason,
Sounds like you might be cavitating. Have you had the pump apart. Sounds like you are "running out of water". A pump inspection/rebuild may be in order as well as a other mods. shoe, rideplate, inducer, if you already do not have them. I am sure the experts will chime in though.

Distributor in front or back doesn't make a whole lot of difference as long as you plan on coming to Parker in June.

Now if you don't make it...  >:D

Welcome to the site and enjoy the festivities  ;D

I think Ill stick with these trick flows as the mild  port work on them outflowed my old heavily ported dove heads and they could use alot more porting and flowbench time ive also got an old dyers 8-71 for the future but this is a"family"boat so I have to stop somewhere I have three kids that love it so I think im gonna keep the boat but it is all learning curve and what a few people have said is my estimate at horsepower is a little shy any ideas or help is great,Im originally from ventura so I know about the so cal smack talkers I was one.................thanks for all the input guys it means alot to me

Hi guys ! most oem Aluminum Impellers are "rated to 450 hp after mkt are OK to 500 ,larger cuts (aa) with "big power" are more vulnerable (greater initial loads) Most bronze are rated to 750+ , Stainless are virtually bullet proof 1000 plus! We sell only A/T Dom and Legend Aluminum and Stainless (and a few Billet alum's)
Some exceptions ,I have a Blown gas guy (Drag Racer)  in AZ runs a B/C aluminum with great sucess (inspects it constantly,at his own peril) Tom

It could be normal. It'll take a moment for the boat to catch up with the engine/pump. The Miller I had revved the tach up to 5200 at a dead stop/slow rolling start and then would calm down as the boat caught up.
