Title: newbie help questions
Post by: jim99 on July 19, 2015, 02:30:19 AM
I just purchased an Ultra 21lx with a jet I'm not familiar with, sorry for the newbie questions.  My previous jet had a cleanout in the bilge and a couple of plugs that I put gear oil into, this one is completely different and I'm not familiar with it.  Need some advice for how to clean it out (if debris gets in it) and what (if any) maintenance is needed.  I think it's a water lubricated pump maybe (don't really know).  If it is, can you run these dry for any length of time (30 sec even or??)??  Is the clean out the triangular plate with the three bolts? (seems a lot more difficult than the two wingnuts that I used to have on the other jet).  I've attached a picture, I'd love any suggestions, recommendations, help, etc...............

thanks

Yes that is the clean out on top. I have had to open mine up to get some weeds out before. There's a grease plug in the engine compartment to grease it up. I also have a 21lx as well, I've had it 6 years now great boat

That looks like a dominator pump. Look at the back of the bowl through the nozzle. There may be a grease fitting in the bowl tail.

I think you are right that it's a dominator pump, I don't know anything about them, only had Berkeley before.  Is there anything I need to know, do I need to lube it somewhere (don't see anywhere), can you start this and run it dry for period of time, are parts available, ect???  Sorry for the silly questions but just looking for any suggestions or advice.

Starting the motor and running it without water will damage the pump. I will not run mine without a garden hose hooked up to cool the motor and pump.
