I have a 12 JE-A pump, in my boat, that is missing the nozzle O-Ring. Can not haveing this O-Ring allow water to shoot around the nozzle, and hit the reverse cup and linkages? My boat has a kind of weird rooster tail, --- it is kind of flat an wide, like something is splitting the water stream. Also, it cavitates on launch, sometimes pretty badly. Could it be possible that water is bouncing back off the reverse cup and controls, and causing the cavitation, by messing up the water flow to the intake grate? Also, there are three holes in the bowl housing on the bottom. Two are for a linkage bracket, and one is just open,-I assume to allow water to drain out so it doesn't freeze. Could that open hole be messing up the intake as well? tAny help on this would be great! Thanks.

Is it "missing" the oring or... was it originally designed for one , the early nozzles didn't have orings (is there a groove on the steering nozzle) the bracket holes in the bowl suggest it may have had OE Berk trim at one time (some trim cables were anchored that way) Not likley the hole is affecting performance or causing cavitation. The "spraying" vs the water being directed out is counter productive and doesn't produce good thrust . Not likely the cavitation you describe and belive your having has anything to do with nozzle exit issues , more likley worn pump internals Tom

Heres a JE nozzle with the o-ring. (Moo's old one). AS you can see, there would be a pretty deep groove for it if it was just "Missing".

This is the best pic I got, and kinda hard to get one of the ride plate setup right now, but there's two bolts coming down from the bowl to the back of the ride plate on mine. One I think also holds on the steering/f/r and trim cables as well. Been awhile since I been under it.

I don't have mine apart at the moment, but thanks alot for the pics of the JE nozzle without the o-ring. At least when I pull it apart, that will let me know if mine is supposed to have one at all. Just for conversation, does it normally affect the boat performance much if an O-ring blows out? Or is it just keep thrust from hitting the cup, and spraying all over?

Those pics HAVE the o-ring, and it is in place. The o-ring is white.
Not sure what it'd do, but probably would affect thrust coming through the nozzle, therefore affecting speed/performance and steering. I would also think it would resemble several "horizontal Rainbirds" running simultaneously from the back of the boat at any kind of speed. ;)
IOW, Yes, it will affect performance, it's there for a reason.

Yup, mine is gone. I'll order one tonight, and see if it helps out performance.
