Packing Gland Question
« on: June 21, 2008, 03:20:51 PM »
Hey Everyone,

On my 12Jc, it seems I am always tightening down the packing gland nuts after every days run. Is this normal? The next morning, when I splash the boat, i get a steady trickle streaming down the sides. After I tighten to the recommended 1 drop per minute im fine. Then next day, back to the stream. Does this mean it is worn out? Where can I buy the replacement? Berkeley shows it as a complete unit for 80 bucks (Packing Gland 150-S12727)
. But I hear everyone on here saying its just a rope for 12 bucks. Can i just oder it thru Tom at JBP? Thanks guys!

Taco'd "a person or people that show up with one lake lice and a family of 50 and cram 3 people at a time on it with no disregard to boating rules or ethics. Usualy crap in toilets and throw shit paper in trash cans. Hang out at the boat ramp like its a swimming hole. Have zero insurance on anything they own and dont give two shits less about your property."

They do tend to dry up if its the old style, has it ever been apart? I know the newer ones have a lot more lubrication built into them, the old ones just used beeswax and didn't last too long if not used often.  I would replace it with one from Tom, I am a mechanical service technician for a mechanical contractor and always use fire pump packings that are designed for extreme service, they have a graphite impregnated silicone that works bitchen.

If they were ever overtightened and overheated you will get exactly what you are experiencing IMO.

Like GT said they do dehydrate over time, just fish the old ones out and replace with some newer graphite (gfo) packings.  A set of them is somewhere in the neighborhood of $8-10.   Don't let anyone talk you into the high dollar clipper seal deal, i would only install one of those if the shaft was new or perfect, and even then if the seal goes out you have to dissassemble the entire pumps to replace it.

Hey Josh can you get me hooked up with those? I am leaving Wednesday and would love to do them while I am out in Laughlin. Its for a 12jC if that makes a difference.

I guess if you are having a tough time working on the packing gland, would that be concidered "Hand to gland combat"?
