I cut and paisted this question and answer from the Berkeley website.  It says to "run water into the pump through the nozzle while running on the trailer".  I didn't do this.  Do you guys do this?

A Berkeley pump can be run out ofthe water as it has a greasedthrust bearing and lubricated tailshaft bushings. The impeller doesnot touch the wear ring, but dueto the fact that the bottom of thepump is open during trailering theboat, it is best to run water intothe pump through the nozzle whilerunning on the trailer. The onlyissues with running out of thewater is that after about 15 to 20minutes the bowl seal can get hotfrom lack of cooling and causeseal damage. The packing gland mayhave to be re-tightened when theboat is used the next time aswell.

You might have blew the seal forward when starting it up on the trailer. If thats a G bowl you can take it off slide seal back on then take a punch to the outer housing area of the seal. Tap a couple spots in the outer rim to pinch the seal slightly from popping out so easy.

Thanks, Its actually an E, converted to a split bowl.  Would it be the same as a G?

This is a pic of a bowl I'm selling and has the rim around the seal center tapped a few times for the same reason...kept it in the whole time I used it. I also ran grease through it instead of oil.

If your careful and don't damage it like the pic in mine. Run some oil/grease around shaft before putting it back on. If your seal just popped forward to impeller nut...slide it off carefully an inspect for damage.

No need to take the droop/steering adapter off, just the 1/2" bolts @ the suction housing to bowl, to get to that seal

OK  I just looked at a Berkeley diagram.  I see where it is now (I think).  For some reason I was visualizing it at the rear of the bowl.

Here is a pic of the seal.  It appears to be in good condition.  It does seem a little offset though.  Is it supposed to sit flush against the bushing?  There is a gap as you can see.

The seal wasn't loose at all.  Its in there real tight.  I heard back from the guy that did the impeller change out and he seemed to think it might just be residual oil from the reinstall.

Where was the seal when you took it off... that gap is normal. If the seal was still in place it might be bad or like you said residual. Was there an oil trail coming from it? Tape the hole up where the seal is then fill the bowl with oil. Look for leak

The seal wasn't off at all.  It was just like you see in the picture.  I couldn't see an oil trail.  I've put it all back together, filled it with oil and watching it for a while.  I think I'm going to just water test it and keep an eye on the oil level.    I'm hoping it was residual.  I was also told it could be a hairline crack or hole in the bowl.  A usual I supposed to use the boat all weekend, but I was told to just keep an eye on the oil level.

It will leak from time to time regardless...you will see water in there as well so remove both plugs and fill one side till it flows out the other done. I thought you might have a crack as well thats why I asked to tape it and fill. I have a split bowl for sale in you need.
