i have a Berkley 12jc that has been sitting out side for around 5 years was wondering if there was a place on the pump to check oil level ,what kind of oil to use and how much

take both plugs out of the top of the bowl and fill one side until it runs out the other nice and clean...

I have always used regular old Hypoid 90 gear lube... Have been using Amzoil's extreme gear 75-90wt now for over a decade (because it is what I use in the I/O's and it's always handy...

i have been told to use the lucas red n tacky i have a tube but have not put it in.. they say to pull both plugs and pump in the lucas in till it comes out the other side no oil needed.. :D

You recommend using oil instead of marine grease? Or should one use the 90w oil to clean out the pump followed by grease? My bowl has a zerk screw & I thought that ment I should use grease? :screwy:

Berkeley pumps all used oil...
Some American Turbines use grease, some use water...
You can use grease, but the Berkeley bowl bearings are Babbitt type bearings and really should be oiled. On the race boat we used oil and ran them pretty hard for long stretches of time and never even saw shaft wear. The grease will never get warm enough to drop the oil out on the Babbitt type bearing to do anything as far as I am concerned.
30 Minute WOT runs are not uncommon on the rivers... Pretty good test IMHO. :thumbup:

Use 90 wt.gear oil check every 2 month or 100 hours of operation. To refill the bowl oil remove both of the 1/8" npt plugs on the bowl and using a squeeze bottle of oil force oil into one of the holes till it comes out the other, re-install both of the plugs. You may notice after a while that the bowl bearing area is full of water and not oil. This is a satisfactory condition, (it is best to keep full of oil) as water will leak past the seal, except that this water could cause structural damage to the bowl if permitted to freeze. For winterizing always re-fill with oil before lay-up of the boat. Both oil and or water will both lube and cool the tail shaft bushing at higher rpm levels. The bowl seal is more designed to keep the water out than the oil in as it is installed towards the pressure of the water. The seal will keep the oil or water mixture in the bowl area when the boat hauled out of the water as well.

I guess I need to blow out the grease & add 90wt oil. Thanks for the advise. :thumbup:
