Droop or Straight Snoot??
« on: February 04, 2015, 03:26:39 PM »
I have a 20.5' Carrera Eclipse and am looking into either a droop or straight snoot. Kind of torn between the 2 since the droop is recommended for boats under 20' and the straight is highly recommended for boats over 21'. WTF I am in the middle dammnit! LOL Just throwing it out there, what would be me best option to settle down the porposing a bit more than just my hydraulic diverter? Thank you for you recommendations in advance and I appreciate all of the input!  8)

I would go with the droop over the straight. The droop will lower your thrust line and add some lift. 👍

The reason for the suggestion to go with a straight for boats over 21' is that the lift that jake is talking about is harder to achieve on larger boats, which causes porpoising because the boat is trying to lift, but cant.

I would play it safe and go with a straight. Theres no reason you want lift anyways in a large cruiser anyways.

So this is my boat. You think a straight would be better to minimize the porposing?

Under what conditions is it porpoising?

Pretty much all conditions. Even when the river is glassy and I'm crusing it slightly porposes. The only time it stops is when I'm full throttle. Lol. Don't think I'll be able to do the this year with my son who is 8 months old in the boat.

Well I would try to find someone that will let you borrow each and find out which one will work.  One trip out and you will know.  I had a full droop and it was a handful off the line but settled down with a mini droop.

This guy is running a droop on his. In the vid it's porpoising, but the diverter is way the frig up so that might explain that.  I assume his boat doesn't always ride like that.

The second pic is the same hull with a droop as well.

If you are having a porpoising issue even with a Diverter, the Straight snoot is the shiznit. Do you know what loader you have?

What causes a porpoise is the lack of available thrust to sustain the attempted lift. In other words, as the hull begins to lift from the water, it becomes "heavier" and the thrust providing the lift is insufficient and allows the hull to come back down, then it has sufficient lift to begin the lift again, only to keep repeating until you change the angle of the nozzle or get on and /or off the loud pedal.

Ultimately what you need is a straight snoot to afford the pump a little more leverage on the hull and a ride plate to push off of. A full droop in my humble opinion can exacerbate the porpoising issue.

The ultimate fix would be about another 300 HP and a bottom detailing to remove any hull defects on the last 8' of the bottom. Not to mention moving as much weight rearward as you can reasonably do without being ridiculous about it... BTW, a light jet is a happy jet.  8)

Good luck.

My brother in law had an Eclipse. They have a huge step in the bottom 6 or 7 feet up as I recall. Anything under 40 it want to rock forward and back.
Over 40 it would set on the tail. It was a terrible boat for skiing and tubing, but it liked to run fast.

My 18' spectra is heavy an porpoised. I added the straight snoot with 4* pin... I also pushed the limits on a wedge ... 2* plus the 4 on snoot is perfect on my hull. I also added the HTP bolt on shoe/ride plate set at 3* up. All said...never has ran this good since I bought it in 2004. Giving a further exit with allow for some slight lift but not over kill. The snoot comes in vertical pin an 4*. Call Dwayne from HTP.
