I may be picking up a 1996 ultra bubble deck on tues, the owner told me it had a weird chatter knock type noise at idle, I went and checked the boat out today, he hooked up water and started it up for me, I only heard the noise once just at idle, sounded as if the impellor shaft was jumping around in say a worn out type bushing or bearing, the pump is a set back berkley, not sure which model but it was a split bowl with a fairly small examine hatch type lid on the outside of the hull, he showed me reciepts of 600+ dollars spent on rebuilding the pump just before last season, only concern I have of the boat, it has a tom papp blown big block in it and runs in the 80mph range, just seeing if its a big issue or a normal type noise? Thanks for any input

They just do that sometimes if they don't have a body of water to load them. My pump was just rebuilt by the best in the business last year, it will still give that familiar pump rattle once in a while, U joints are good. I wouldn't let it keep me from buying a nice float :beer:
No jet pump likes to be ran out of water.

Under low/no load, the pump will rattle. The front trust bearing is a double angular contact bearing...with both halves set up in the same direction, unlike a machine spindle bearing where they're set up opposite and preloaded against each other. Without a thrust load, the bearing is very sloppy. DO NOT run the pump unless it's under water. The front of the shaft is flopping around enough to let the impeller contact the wear ring...especially with the typically mostly worn out bowl bushings that I find in about every pump I've ever taken apart.
If its a new boat for you, go through the pump...not that expensive. Then, depending on how hard you beat on it, change the thrust bearing evey year or 2. If the pump thrust bearing gives up, you'll likely lose a crankshaft at the very least, or worst case scenario, the block too....the crankshaft will take all the thrust load.
Cheap insurance.

My boat does the same thing at idle. does not matter if i am running on hose or in the river. Took boat over to Jack at MPD and he said all looks good. I am gonna run it for at least another season then get it rebuilt. drop impeller to an AB from AA

thanks man, I've been at it for 13 years, gotta get good sometime, I can assure you your bars will be solid haha, I get a lot of work off that site due to me always trying to one up everyone with quality, ill have to take you for a ride in my ranger one day, 450hp small block ford powered, you'll love it!

If there is any slop in the driveline between the engine and pump there will or can be rattle at idle if the engine is run with the pump unloaded. Clearance can in the u-joint brgs themselves or between the splines of the yoke and the pump shaft. Stainless and bronze impellors are more likely to rattle because they weigh more than aluminum.

the second he fired it up and let it run on the trailer with the pump hooked up i wouldve given him a :sly: look and just got in my car and kept looking elsewhere.
theres plenty of boats out there with owners that know a little more than this dude. or at least lowball him on the price and use that money for a pump rebuild.

who cares if its a bag of bricks tied to the balancer? dont run the pump out of the water... but hey its your money.

my tahiti used to knock at idle with water hose in the pump and motor when she got in the lake no knock quit p!@#%yfootin grab it or make him come down a bit

oh god...idling the boat on the trailer for a short amount of time isnt the end of the world. :screwy:

McLure, who rebuilt my pump, told me to try not to run it on the trailer if at all possible. Also he said put at least 10 hours on the pump in the water before doing that.
I think that's not so bad as long as there's not a pile of sand in your pump and you hose it good before and during running and turn motor off at 20 secs.

Not looking to debate here.....just trying to clarify if you're purchasing a boat, and the guy fires it up (with pump attached) to show you it runs....its not the end of the world for that pump, it will be ok.
