Hey Guys,
Can you identify my pump for me on my new Boat. Is it a 12JC? Next few questions, its got some bushwacker diverter on it, never seen it before. Any info on it? I am getting alot of spray coming over the transom when running. Im thinking its my reverse gate dragging, it is a little loose, but even if I push the handle straight forward it doesnt change the spray. Also , the boat rides real wet. (See Pics) Even with the diverter up. Obviosly without the split bowl, I cant add a wedge to correct it right? Is it had to convert to split bowl? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!
Chris

From the looks of it , your reverse bucket/gate/whatever you call it , dooesnt go up far enough . Get a look at it straight on from the back with the lever pushed all the way forward . Thats my .02

there should be a metal tag riveted on the unit inside on the jet by the splines......it will have the model# on it

Looks to me by looking at the picture of the boat running, that boat is either really heavy, or has a wicked hook, I guess could also have a "soft bottom" When boats sit on a poor fitting trailer they can get a strange hook in the hull (rare).
Check or have checked the pump linkages, the bottom condition, and the wieght of the boat.
Most of the jetboat hulls had a hook molded into them to prevent porpoising due to low horsepower (higher pump velocities seem to cure this phenominon). Is that a Lavey craft?
Hope this helps.
BTW looks like a 12JC to me. Still should work better than it does though. Switching to split bowl simple but pricey.

Thanks guys for the tips. It is a 1980 Crusader 21'. So coming from a 18' boat, I know its gonna take some time for me to get used to the weight. Obviosuly this boat is ALOT more beeffier and clumsy. But yea, I agree GT, something needs to be corrected! Chromey I will check that tag and see what she says.

Yup found the tag, its a 12JC :) My steering cable was hiding that plate, but once i climbed ih the bilge i was able to see it!

Damn... All these guys should be politicians. Hell, ask a simple question and it get drug out for for 5 nothing answers. Maybe be one answered. If they don't know why not say so, not talk about the reverse bucket, or whatever. You are better off to just check yourself. If there's company name on the casting, ask the maker. Take a photo and send it to them, they will answer and not tell you they don't know in a lot of BS!!!

Boy, somebody had their grits shit in today! ;D
By the way, also noticed in the picture of the boat from the rear, that the boat overhangs the trailer, that is a good place to start looking for a hull issue. My "half a nickel" Our old (1979) Spectre 20' was a tank but didn't do too bad with a diverter (57 MPH) and it was a 455.
Lighten up GAWnCA

Your Jets is a 12 JC ,yes the boat is massivly "wet" and the Bush wacker was a decent piece made by Jim X a former associate of place (maybe an employee) that was sued out of existance by Place in the late 80's for copying or patent infringment or ?? they (Bushwacker) had some issues like you descibed spraying etc . Part of the probs with that trim can be resolved (call me) and re you wet/speed problem we have some ideas too you prolly have some more MPH in there just need to get all the weight AFT and tune that jet "less wetted surface= more speed' Happy to try to help Tom

Oh Bull Shit GT(?). I knew it was a JC pump just by looking and I'm not a pro. You still fed a line of crap and didn't answer the question. Tom from JBP did. What did you, GT, offer to the original question.... NOT A DAMN THING, except a half nickle - is that like a 3 dollar bill? So if you can't answer the question don't say anything. It looks like a PD, only an older version.
I'm sure he knew his boat was heavy... DAMN HE SAID SO.

Dude, what is your problem? I've been a mechanic in the boat industry for nearly 20 years. There were several questions asked in the origional post, the one you are referring to was answered three times before I even saw the post. I could not "dead on" answer any of his questions without more info, nor could anybody else. I recommended he have it "checked" by someone which meant someone who knows what they are doing (not you).
I think you need to keep it light, I was simply trying to help out someone I didn't even know, with a problem I just happen to know a lot about, sorry if this pissed you off!

I know mine does the same thing, but it has nothing to do with the diverter setup. I need a new reverse cable, its coming apart. When the bucket is adjusted right, it still sticks down into the water stream about a half of an inch. You can pull it up out of the way with your hands, but i doesn't stay.

On my diverter with a 3" stroke cable I had to drill and tap a new hole on the arm between the bucket pin and the original hole to get it to go up all the way. I'm sure with a longer stroke cable this is not needed and I'm not sure if it's like that with all 3" stroke cables, but on mine it was. Once I added the hole closer to the pin it came up all the way.

Slow67 call if you need help with this its an "adjustment/geometry' thing (not cable stroke) Happy to help Tom @ JBP 805 466 4719

Just curious Chris... find anything out about your set-up?

Hey GT,
Not yet. I just been running it for the summer. I did speak with Jim and he gave me some background on the Bushwacker. Said that they did have a problem with spray, and I had my girl run the boat a few weeks ago and i looked behind and noticed that it was a combo of the reverse bucket dragging and design flaw I think. I tightened the bucket up as much as possible, but the cable just has too much flex in it. Guess I need a new one.
The boat is just a heavy sled :) I tried adjusting the diverter ram, and it is all the way for upstroke. She wont go any more up without some grinding. So for now, Im just gonna enjoy the more space and take her easy!

Hey GQ, I have actually used a Bushwacker years ago on my old Beachcomber, it actually worked pretty well, the biggest problem is the reverse buckets geometry is not right, had to drill a second 1/4"x20 hole for the linkage attachment, wasn't too difficult and did make a small diifference.
Also just out of curiosity, did you ever check the bottom of the boat out, specifically right where the boat sits on the trailer? This type of hull has a small amount of hook built into it and it varies by manufacturer, there is not a lot that can be done in the short term, but it will answer a lot of questions.
In risk of asking the same question twice, have you had this boat weighed?, the reason for asking is our Crusader had this foam flotation crap between the hull and floor and it was totally water logged, the hull with no engine or drive system weighed over 2400#, (23' boat), to put that into perspective when finished tearing it all out it weighed under 1200#, thats like 145 gallons of water! Any ways worth looking at. Your boat should weigh in at about 2800# less trailer.
Keep us posted!

Hey GT! THanks for the tip, could you show me exactly on the pic where you had to drill the hole? I have no problem doing that to get it fixed.
Also I will weigh the boat, thanks for the tip. I am headed out next weekend so will see if there is anywhere near Needles/Laughlin that I can get her on the scale with. Ill report back with the findings!

The way we had to do mine was to remove the 1/4" bolt from the reverse gate and tape it wide open, then put the shift lever all the way foreward and mark on the bucket where the cable end stopped, then close the bucket and reverse the shift lever for reverse and mark it again, the difference is how much you need to move the hole, (I think mine was almost a 1/2") then you need to grind a flat spot for the cable end and drill a hole to be tapped 1/4"X20, repaint the bare aluminum and reinstall the cable end, I use a little blue Locktite (keeps it from falling out and seals the threads to keep them from corroding).
By doing this all you are really doing is decreasing the amount of "throw" needed to full stroke the reverse bucket, I had origionally tried to get a longer shift lever arm but but there was't enough cable throw.
BTW Jetaholic had to do the same thing to get his to work properly....

The other thing you can look at is your throttle lever. Mine has 3 holes for the reverse bucket, all in different positions with different throws.

Thanks GT for the excellent write up. Definately going to do this mod in the near future, I appreciate taking the time to write it up for me. I'll post a pic once Im done to show results.
