I've been told its a good idea to pump water resistant grease into the threaded port at the too of the jet is that a good idea. Thanks Maloney

If you are talking about the two pipe thread Ports in the bowl, I am not a fan...
I use 140wt gear oil if yours is a Berkeley pump.
Some have used grease, but that is not what it war designed for.

I have a berkley 12jg when do you know when to fill it since there's no way to check it? How full does it need to be?

I check mine before going out. Take both plugs out, fill at highest hole til fluid runs out of other hole and put plugs back in. My pump is a Berk JC and I assume jg us the same

Yeah what he said. I use 90wt gear oil and full every time I take it out. Most of the time it seeps out the bottom too.

If its seeping out..time for a new bowl/shaft gasket. I started using grease in mine and did it that way for years without any trouble.

Yes I used the 90w when I first got the boat and it seaped out/mixed with water. Then nest time I used 2 bottles of 140w and pushed out water and oil mix till it was coming out clear and seeping stopped and no more water mix. When I check it is usually full and clean with no water mix ;)
Berk manual says gear oil, but caint remember what weight for sure. The grease thing sounds fine but....I am just unsure til I try it myself. This is another one of those topics that you can here a ton of different things like the water flow thru engine and headers thing..

I think I like the 140wt method the best. Pumping full of grease just doesn't seem right to me. Thanks for the info

Check out Lucas oil M8. It's a marine gear oil.

Just fwiw, it does not need to be a marine gear oil because there are literally no steel parts that can rust in that area of the pump. The thrust bearing on the other hand, stick with the marine grease, virtually anything with lithium.

Defiantly use gear oil. If you look around on the companies website, it will tell you what weight to use but I am pretty sure it's 90w

Technically speaking, grease is for rolling element bearings. The bearings in the bowl are babbit.
When grease is used it should be done every single outing, after the shaft moves even a little there is no grease contacting the moving parts.
Also the bowl bearings do not get warm enough to drop the oil out of the grease which is how most greases work.
You more than likely did not have any issues because of the amount of hours the pump ran and unless you actually measured the bearings, have no idea how much wear took place, the grease will definitely slow the wear on the shaft though. I highly recommend gear lube with a race shaft, $3 worth of oil is better than $400 for a new shaft.

My new bowl uses similar tail shaft bearings and comes standard with a grease zerk at the shaft. If by chance you have a worn tail shaft, there is a repair kit for less than a new shaft. I did a rebuild on my pump after running it for 8+ years with grease and tail was fine(had to replace thrust and packing). I also use my boat alot and go up river several miles each way each trip.

It quite literally does not matter, but Berkeley recommends Hypoid 90.
I use Amsoil Extreme Gear 140 because I have it.
