That is an insert pump, and the hull was designed with the intake already in the hull. I forget the name of the model.

Berkeley E pumps and Panther pumps are similar in design regarding the hull.

Although not impossible to remove, these pumps were epoxied in. (Sea Goin epoxy), and usually don't need to be removed for rebuilding.

Cleaning it up is a matter of silicon removal/repair, and then paint, but you are kind of stuck with what you have, without reengineering the bottom of the boat.

The exhaust tips are probably siliconed in, and might need a little persuasion. (BFH) Sometimes they will cleanup pretty good just by sanding and polishing.

It should already be epoxied in,  only minimal amounts of silicone is needed.

I use DAP 100% silicone, from
Home Depot Speed and Marine.

How would you know when it time to service the pump?  I have the motor out, going to be going back in around 500HP.  Should I address anything on the pump?

It's pretty easy to put a bearing and seals in, if everything else is good.

But it can be a can of worms.

I'd look at the front of the impeller.
And then check the front to rear wear ring clearance.

To change the bearing and seals, the bowl has to come off anyways.


Then check the rear of the impeller, as well as the cut of it. Inspect the bowl bushing and seal too.

Might as well pull the impeller and wear ring and check the radial clearance.

Now you are ready to pull the shaft with the bearing on it.

If everything checks out ok, then press a new bearing on and start reassembly.

Minus the bearing and seals, and a couple of gaskets, it's mostly labor. But will a new mill, it's cheap insurance and peace of mind.
