In need of help with 12jg-a pump
« on: July 31, 2011, 07:16:58 PM »
I bought my 74 Tahiti about 2 weeks ago took it out to El Capitan and it did awesome! I went to grab the handle for the jetovator and it didn't have much adjustment in it. With the pump as high as it would go you could barely tell by looking at the water. As you can see in the pictures the bracket that the steering arm bolts to is hitting the bowl. Can I shave that? I have a wedge coming in the mail and a droop snoop and ride plate are coming after this next river trip.

Dude do your self a favor an ditch the jetovator and call tom at Jbp
And order a place diverter. It makes a world of difference and a lot more
Adjustment and more reliable. I switch my spectra over a while ago and
It was the best mod I did on the boat. You already have a handle so you won't need that
Trust me it is the way to go

Stand back a little further and take/post a pic of the whole pump and nozzle. somethings not right at all with you're hardware.

Parts look like Berk Jetovator and parts look like a Bushwhacker trim nozzle hacked together maybe?   :screwy:

Here's a breakdown of all the parts of a Jet-O-Vater, which, at the end of your steering cable looks right. The rest dont. Get a pic of the steering cable, jet0vater cable inside the transom as well. Just wwent through all this, twice, chasing down all the parts for the pair of Jetovaters I recently sold. With all the correct parts, they work well!

Some of the missing parts if I'm right, ARE still available, pricey as hell though, in which case I'd look for a complete used Jetovater (Sold mine for $250 each), or as Chris said, replace the whole thing with a Place Diverter, which is another animal altogether. Tom or Jim might have the used parts you'd need though. The expensive stuff, you already have........The transom seal/steering tube/spring and related hardware is over $300 to replace that stuff.

Heres pics of the ones I had, as you can see, the nozzle looks a LOT different than the nozzle you have. These were off 12 JG's as well.

These are all the steering cable/through transom parts. Seems you have all this...

I definitely want to go to a place. My dad had one on his predator and it shot like crazy, with a "stock" pump and 454

Thanks for catching that. I'll get better pictures tomorrow, if I converted over to a place diverter, would that solve some/all of these issues?

You can do that. I would buy the whole Place kit, handle and all were I (And I have) to do it though.  Adapting over your handle would probably cause issues, for one, and probably no cheaper when you price out the price of a diverter, a new cable, the transom seal for the new cable, etc.

You are ALSO going to need, bettter write this parts list all down. A new steering cable tube, nuts and seal for the transom adaptor, the Jet-O-Vator one will not work. A new gasket for the bowl to nozzle adaptor, because it'll need to be removed, cleaned and rotated 90* then reinstallled. You will need to seal the little hole left that will be under where the steering tube comes through on the transom adaptor, and might need a steering cable extension, and possibly a new washer for the F/R cable seal (if not a new, longer cable) if it needs more slack.

Post or PM me the pics. It's not as simple as "rip it out and drop a Place unit in there" kinda deal. Hate to see you spend a grand when maybe a few bucks will get the thing working like it's supposed to......... :sly:

Looks all Berk to me, except that arm. Could be Berk as well, but if it is, also looks bent as hell! Probably not gonna straighten it easily, but grinding that "shroud" looking part completely off where it kinda follows the contour of the nozzle adaptor would be the first thing I'd do. Can't see where it offers any structural integrity, first, and definately limits it's travel. Everything else is original Berk Jet-O-Vater though. Just that arm........ :screwy:

I would start grinding off, aggressively, that curved portion of the arm. Might just look strange to me because everyone I've seen has had that done already maybe.

Okay fellas I think this is as good as it is going to get for now without grinding the actual pump. But I'm really pleased with the outcome.
