Impeller help?
« on: January 19, 2016, 06:22:27 PM »
I need to replace my impeller, but I'm not sure which one to get? I have a Berkeley pump, but I'm told the bowl I have is a dominator. Is there a difference between impellers or does it not matter??? And I would also like to get your advise on impeller cut. I currently have an "a" impeller and it gets me 63mph @5200 rpm, what would you guys recommend to get me a higher mph?? Thanks

The sheer amount of information for this is quite a large part of impeller selection.

What the hell do you want to turn more rpm?. I don't think I understand.

Put an A back in it. I have a brand new aluminum and a ring on the shelf if you're looking.

what are your engine specs? Are you hoping to turn more rpm because your engine makes RPM up higher?

454 bored .030 over domed Pistons, compression is 9.5-1, 781 heads comp xm flat tappet cam duel plane manifold with 750cfm dp carb. 18ft eliminator! Not looking to turn higher rpm, just looking to get a higher mph, just not sure if I would be better with a c cut or b cut, or a2, a3? Not sure which impeller would make the boat go faster

whats the power range of the cam?

i think you might be about perfect with an A. but im not an expert
Maybe a B is better for you, youll gain about 2-400 rpm i think

IMHO, stick with an A.

Install a quality loader and if you don't have one,  a Diverter.

Honestly the trick is in the set up of the hull and pump more than impeller cut.

As an example, unless you can gain 50hp by spinning the engine faster, the speed gains by an impeller cut all by itself will be nearly immeasurable.

Just reading about your set up and based on nothing but past experiences and numerous assumptions,  it sounds like you have a worn pump with wide wear ring clearance. That being said,  just a tighter impeller to wear ring gap and some freshening up and adjustments should net you another 3-5mph, pretty easily actually.

If you want that impeller kit let me know. I sent you a pm.

I'll share my recent experience

I have a small block (5.3 ls) powered boat. Since day one ive run a BC impeller.

I destroyed that impeller and ended up putting a B+ in (thank you flusher!) with the intentions of running it at Tom Papp then pulling it out and having it cut to a BC like my previous one

My wide open RPM did not drop much at all but my cruise rpm dropped substatially. And i ran more mph than before. Basically i agree with GT, you may not gain the MPH you are looking for with a smaller impeller. Youll be moving less water.
