SD309 American Turbine Cavitation Issue ?
« on: May 29, 2023, 07:57:42 PM »
Alright well here is the situation. This past weekend took my boat out to the river for the first time ever. Did not run it too much because I must've sucked up some rocks in the jet lol I know idiotic move. I'm still new and don't have much experience but I learn from my mistakes. Anyways, after that I had no thrust so the boat just had pure suction like the boat was just trying to sink itself. Just high rpm a few times and no acceleration nose up in the air. Eventually Was able to dock it then trailer it. Parked it the rest of the weekend. Went home broke it down, got to the impellor and the fins were pretty jacked up mushroomed. I have a spare impellor luckily but it has a dink on an outside fin but its in better shape then the other impellor. This is my question for the pros... Should I just Buy a new impellor? If so where is a credible source I can purchase from? The bowl was pretty banged up as well I filed the rough edges on the bowl. But, Do i need to buy a new bowl? Am I doing the correct thing to solve this gnarly cavitation, am I on the correct path?

Here is the Photo, that is the old impeller, and the bowl. That brown stuff is just discoloration from water sitting in there guess idk lol..
Ill take a photo of the other impeller later I have it mounted on already.

Would you be able to post pics of the other impeller and the bowl

Bowl doesn?t look too bad, could definitely use some work.  Impeller looks like it has stress cracks in at least one section . We?re there any rocks jammed in the impeller vanes?? Now that you have it apart check that ware ring for damage ???  I?m sure other guys on here can offer more in depth info but my parts were way worse and it just had a slight cavitation out of the hole.

You want to file the leading edges of both the impeller and the bowl.
Think airplane wing, not knife edge (weaker) while you're there, check the radial tolerances of the impeller to wear ring. It should be at ~0.0125" per side (radial), and .025" to .030" at the leading edge, if I remember right (shouldered). Shims will help you with your leading edge dimensions. Wear rings are available undersized based on your skirt dimensions.

Any questions, pm me.

Well looks like this could be the issue I found a hole in the suction part of the pump. I?ll post a picture. Would a hole in the suction part cause it to have cavitation I would think so. Anyways I don?t have a welder to weld it so I just JB welded it until the winter then I?ll bring it to a machine shop. But check out the hole.

That would do it (cavitation)
Does the area around the hole seem thin, vs the rest of the pump? Check closely.
