Title: Set back pump
Post by: Riverrat817 on December 29, 2016, 05:06:36 PM: Quick question for all you smart guys out there. I have seen a lot of pumps set back but never seen one set back this far. Any reason for this?

Post by: Derrick on December 29, 2016, 05:13:08 PM: That's a gullwing. Gullwings have angled transoms and they appear to not be as far out as other boats. It depends on what you're using it. My bahner when I did it I went 4" back from the original position to leave a little bit of connection in the back of the hull. Reasoning is for the abuse on the river. It helps the strength of the boat. Not a lot of info on set backs. I did a lot of research before I did mine. Some hulls like it and some will get scary riding dry.

What kind of boat? Horsepower? Your intended usage?

It's quite a bit involved and pricey.

Also, what is your current engine mounting system? Shoe & ride plate?

Reason I ask is, usually we don't do JUST a setback. It opens the proverbial can-o-worms.

Moving the pump back necessitates new transom plates or a modified transom adapter.

The keel in front of the intake needs glassed in.

You will need a longer drive line and/or it would be a good time to install a Jet-A-Away.

The relocated pump can play havoc with drive line angle. Sometimes you get lucky because a longer drive shaft can have minimal effect on angle or it can just come out all wrong, forcing moving the engine.
