New to boats, what do I need to look for in the jet as far as impeller, wear ring, and whatever else there is? Anyway to tell if either of those are bad?

Check the stringers...this is a common issue and can really sideline any boat for a long time and for a lot of money
look for cracks along the stringer where it joins the hull....also get in the boat....and lean into the stringer with your body weight...see if it flexes....inspect for rot and wood discoloration where you can see wood through the resin.....especially on the transom and surrounding areas.
ideally you want a full stringer boat....though 1/4 stringer isnt bad, its more desireable to have a full stringer boat.
also. ideally you want a berkeley pump......panthers, jaccuzis, bayjet, etc are decent pumps, but parts/service are more readily available for the berk pumps.
also, check for the obvious stuff like things that are poorly maintained....'mickey mouse' fixes....etc.
never buy a boat unless they can start it for you....go for a test drive if possible.
also, dont be afraid to ask questions here....post up some pictures and we'll give you our honest opinion.
lastly....give us an idea of what kind of boat you are looking for. there is several people on here that just thumb through sites looking for parts, boats, etc on ebay, craigslist, etc...and if you give us an idea, someone can hunt it down for you right away.

X2! Look for ROT! If you aint lookin to start a major project anytime soon.
American Turbine/Dominator pumps are top notch as well and parts/service is just as available as the berks.
I got impatient to buy my first jet float, didnt do the research, and now my anus feels like I just got out the pen! OH! And here's another tip...look for a boat thats got or set up for a CHEVY. Try to stay away from an Olds and definitely stay away from those Ford thingys ;)

Hay, there isn't anything wrong with having an Olds engine. Unless your looking to run at high rpm for long periods of time and being able to buy parts off the shelf. ;D

Stainless and bronze impellers are good, but not necissary until the higher HP is desired, look for signs of abuse, like gelcoat worn through the bottom of the hull and rock marks all over the intake of the pump, make sure all of the controls move easily and smoothly with no "slop", grab the seats and anything else that should be bolted in hard...
If you go to look at a boat your interested in for sale, I would recommend some tools.
First and formost you need a flashlight and a mirror, you can see things even the owner does not know about, look under the engine at the mounts (do you see movement where the mount "used to be"?), look under the dash, if the wiring looks shitty, it is,, look into the intake of the pump (under the boat) if it looks like the pump has moved some gravel, it has, look inside the gas tanks and take a whiff and shine the flashlight into the tanks, if they're aluminum, you should see shiney new looking metal, if it's whitish "pass!", look at the underside of the seats, very easy to see if the wood in the seat bases is rotting, if the seat bases are rotting there is a good chance the hull construction wood is dying a slow death too.
The next tool you will bring is a small ball peen hammer and a screwdriver, just simply tap the hammer along the stringers and the floor and transom, wherever there is wood used in the construction of the hull, if the wood is good it will sound super hard, like hitting a pool table surface, if not it will sound like you struck a cardboard box use the screwdriver to lightly poke around to find how big the soft spot is, most 30-40 year old boats will have some dry rot, it's up to you to decide how bad it is.
Do not ever buy a boat in running condition without hearing it run, maybe even take it to the water if you can, this will bite you in the ass every time.
Lastly if you buy a turn key boat, go through everything service wise and take it to the water as soon as humanly possible, recheck the oils and whatnot, if something does not sound right, it isn't.
If its sounds too good to be true... well you know the rest.
