So i been chasimg this damn sputter for a couple momths now....runnimg a 460, claysmith mild cam, 60 over kb pistons...just rebuilt.. new fuel pump, 5.5psi fuel, new plugs and wires, pertronix ignition with 6 month old coil...6 month old cap and rotor...the boat runs hard for the first 5 mins with a lil sputter after that i notived started getting worse and started seeing and smelling smoke under dash...im thinking its ignition problem ot sure...any suggestions really stumped maybe wiring?

Im going to follow this thread to see what responses you get. Ive got a similar problem. Ive got a slight misfire that seems to be getting worse. I think its a voltage drop problem because I also have a problem with not wanting to start. My starter is a new one, battery has a full charge and sometimes the starter will click if you start it with the key but if you run a jumper wire from the battery straight to the starter, it cranks fine so, I think they are related. If you see or smell smoke, maybe just check for loose wires under the dash. Maybe one of the wires on the back of the ignition switch could be loose causing your ignition to cut out. Electrical isn't my strong suit so, hopefully someone smarter will chime in soon lol. Good luck bud !

If you are smelling burning wire please stop using the boat until you figure it out they burn fast

Your problem is almost for sure your excite wire run a new wire from S on your key switch to starter should fix it. also could need a new power wire to the ignition switch or both but I agree I think you have a voltage drop

I'm thinking you have an electrical short are you are running way to small wire but at this point if you can't find the bad wire for sure no doubt it was the one for safety alone I think you should re wire the boat

Your problem is almost for sure your ignition wire run a new wire from ign on your key to the power source for your ignition system should fix it

That's what I was thinking too, havn't really spent a lot of time looking into but........ I did find 1 wire on the ignition switch a little loose (was able to turn the screw about 1/4 to 1/2 turn and another b+ wire loose on the dash light switch so, before I start messing with wiring, im gonna see if those loose ones were the culprit causing me to have resistance. Im taking out this weekend to find out. Thanks for your input though, I appreciate it.

For sure I have had 2 boats I had to replace those wires on

yeah my msd box is in front to keep it away from water and all of the wiring is all neat inside a mesh loom so, im not rearlly looking forward to tearing into it lol. Im gonna run a voltage drop test on the power side and the ground side tonight to see what I get, for all I know it could be a corroded ground and im chasing the power source.

BTW Glencoe460, Im sorry, didn't mean to jack your thread man.

Its all good... so i hope i found the problem lol...at least the smoking part....found wire going to bilge fried and along the way burnt into the white ignition and red power... ordering new harness from cp
