Looking for volvo pump info or manual
« on: November 24, 2017, 12:00:20 PM »
Hey guys I just bought my first boat recently. I took it out for a run and it ran great but really slow(30mph). Now it's not supposed to be a fast boat but I feel it should run faster than this. I was looking inside the pump and I see a few rocks wedged in the stator vanes. I tried to get them out but they just fell back inside the bowl. I am looking for a manual for my volvo pjx pump so I can take it apart with confidence. I'm not super mechanically inclined but I'm also not a moron haha. I just want to make sure I put it back together correctly and it would also be nice to find some maintenance info so I can take care of it properly. Anybody have a lead on where I might find a manual for this pump? Boat is a 1999 larson 176 with a volvo 4.3 litre.

I can't remember if the Volvo pump was made by Dominator or Legend. It is a Berk style pump

Regardless, the bowl is pretty easy to remove.

CP Performance has quite a few videos on the Berkeley pump.

http://www.cpperformance.com/t-berkeley_jet_rebuild.aspx

Look at the je or the jf pumps.

Yes, there are some minor differences but are more alike than not.

Rocks in the stator is never a good sign. Might need a new impeller.

Good luck,

Dan'l

The pump intake has no grate on it so it sucked up some big rocks. How do I know when I need a new impeller? I've heard guys with the same boat saying it goes 52 at wot but mine only does about 30-35.

First, pull it apart.

Likely the leading edges of the impeller are trashed.

Çheck The wear ring to impeller skirt gap.

If it's aluminum, it's probably scrap, stainless can be repaired,  to a certain extent.

Tom at Jet boat performance would know what impeller it needs. Possibly CP Performance, too.

Good luck

Much appreciated good sir! I have never taken apart a pump before so am I correct in assuming I need new bushings/seals for when I put it back together?

I know nothing about Volvo pumps. But I have seen a picture...lol.

If it's like a Berk/Dom/AT/Legend, you might need 1 bowl gasket, 50/50 chance. Easy to make, too.

Bowl shaft seal could go either way. Worry about it when it's apart.

Looks VERY similar to a Berkeley JC bowl, with Place Diverter.

The long ass bolt on the steering HAS to go. The tiny bolts for adjusting the ride plate gotta go too.

Just my $0.02

Yeah I already got a replacement for the steering bolt. Which of the other 2 are you referring too? The ones that connect to the bowl towards the end of the ride plate or the other 2 that seem to connect to nothing?
