this may be a stupid question but i will ask anyway, i am running a berkely 12-jg pump, just reinstalled on boat and the steering is very very stiff, no cable attatched just the pump, i had the pump powdercoated but the problem was there before that was done, i replaced the plastic bushings, now if i loosen the screws that hold the rods in place it turns alot easier, my question is if the bolts i am loosening only hold the rod in, why would that affect steering, or am i missing something or having a brain fart, maybe i finally lost that one brain cell that seperated me from a talking monkey?

Just a guess... maybe when the screws are tightened up it un-aligns the pins and when the screws are loose it allows the pins to be lined up with each other?

so you think i should just lock tight them in and snug them up not totally tighten them ???
all info is greatly appreciated

That's what I would do (lock tight). But since I'm not you, you might want to wait for some more replies. :D
