1976 Tahiti with a 429 & Berkeley...
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:52:15 PM »
Breaking in a Rebuilt engine... During break in I noticed a slow steady stream of water coming from where the drive line goes into the Berkeley pump only at RPMs over 2500 no leaking @ Idle or when sitting (the Boat sat dry for over 3yrs)...   I also noticed a random medium vibration when in forward, neutral or reverse at idle.. I replaced the U-Joint that goes directly into the pump..  FYI i am a seasoned boater, but new to the Jet World...   Any advise would be welcome....

Thanks ~E~

what type of berk pump? some have a "packing seal" that seals the pump shaft in the suction housing. over time the seal wears and you need to snug the nuts that hold it.  after a while it just needs to be replaced.  a pic would help a LOT in this case. as far as vibration who knows, how does the impeller look?  any huge chips in it, or a rock wedged in the vanes?  id recommend not running it anymore until you get that sorted out.

tighten these bolts on either side of the pump 1 turn....see if that helps with the leak.

what RPM's is the vibration kicking in? only at idle? or is it when its under extreme load (ie getting on plane)

Only at Idol..   The Jet feels good out of the hole, I ran it up to 4500RPM (40+mph) with no problems. Ran her most of the day 20+ Gal of gas at around 3500RPM.... Everything seems smooth! I just want to make sure all is good befor I take her to Parker...

Thanks
