Good day folks, new guy here from Canada.

I have recently picked up a 1972 Sea Ray SRV 190 with a 455 / 12JC - A.

When running around at low rpm the bilge stays dry but after a higher speed run, it has a fair bit of water in the hull. It takes a minute or two for the pump to get rid of it.

Would this be the bowl gasket leaking? Everything else under pressure in the jet is outside the hull.

If you have a loader grate, and the shaft packing rings are worn out, it'll take water at higher speeds. At higher speeds (with a loader) you have positive pressure in front of the impeller. My 12 JG shaft seal will just barely drip at idle and low cruise, but drips much faster at high cruise or WOT. Still not a lot of water though, maybe 2-3 gallons during a full afternoon of hot-dogging around the lake. It sounds like yours is leaking pretty fast. Yes, it could be the bowl gasket, but I am more inclined to suspect the packing rings. Get someone to watch it (or drive) while you're romping on it. It's an easy fix, just add more rings. If the packing gland is tightened all the way down and it's still leaking, you'll probably need to add 2 rings.

Well, I got the water figured out. At anything over 2000 rpm, the water flows in pretty good past the bowl gasket on the starboard side. I checked the bolts and they didn't tighten much so I guess I'm gonna have to pull it apart.

That would do it.

Gaskets are easy to come by.

Pretty simple repair.

I made one out of a beer box cover, on a picnic table at the river, with a pocket knife. Lasted 6 or 7 years.

Update:

Got the transom cover and the bowl off. The gasket was in many pieces lol!! I guess the O ring could hold the water when sitting and at low RPM but would let it pass once the pressure got higher.

I have the parts on order from CP Perf.

One question, my nozzle doesn't have an O ring where it goes into the bowl. Its a 1972 so is this something that came along later?
