Bought the boat on ebay awhile back and never put it in the water. I'm in the middle of the restoration with the boat getting regelled, motor at the machine shop, pump at JBP, trailer being sanded in the driveway, and the adjustable ride plate is spead out over the pool table freshly powder coated. It was set up with a steering cable attached to an old superwench motor under a seat with a switch on the dash. Dont know what would be the best way to operate it would be. A pedal or would a place diverder handle have enough leverage.

Hey Josh,
here is my setup, what do you think about the ride plate length. I would say I could probably lose a couple of inches but would it be worth the trouble. The boat doesn't turn for chit when cruising over say.. 25 mph, it just wants to do a 180. and that really sux. At least I am close to the water so I can wash off the poo after it tries to do its disappearing act (to the bottom of the lake) I have spun it out twice now, and now I just refuse to turn the wheel when I get it up over 25-30 mph. And no I dont turn sharp with the diverter up or down. Both times the diverter was straight out the back, it just catches a little air and BAM, I am cruising backwards.  :o

I'd probbably try shortening the ride plate 4" or so maybe in 1 inch increments.  But at first glance it looks like the exit nozzel is way up in relation to the keel.  I'd level the boat out and check the pump angle, the top of the intake/base of the suction should at 4 degrees or so.  It looks like it may less that could be causing you handling issue.

might also be an alusion, didn't you say your plate was set at 0?

Post by: DOZZR on January 31, 2008, 03:05:49 PM
I set it originally at approx. 2-3* up, then fine tuned it with the diverter in mid range (rooster around 3 feet above water level) at WOT, til I found the spot where it didnt porpoise, and didn't feel any drag. Just a degree or so really DID make a difference and now that it is set its around 1* "UP" It feels right no drag, no porpoise, but it is still scary to turn sharp.
Here are a couple more that might help, I can't believe I dont have any pics showing it straight on with the angle showing, I know I have one I just cant find it

Josh and I were talking about the length, the boat turns like chit and I have spun it out twice. I am going to shorten it up an inch at a time, up to 4 or 5 inches
Greg Shoemaker posted this on the perfromance boat board:
"Rideplates, rounded, concave, radiused. ribbed, dimppled and slotted proved to do nothing significant in a drag race set up. The rule of thumb when we started racing was somewhere around 18 inches. Well being young and fearless Jeff ,Norm, and myself decided to test ridplate length with one of the Dash for Cash boats at one of our famous test scessions at the now Blue Watwer Casino formly BlueWater home of the NJBA. On an off weekend we took our test to the water and this is what we came up with .Starting with a 18'' we ran the boat everything went well our std setup Test 2 20'' ran the boat and it was visibly freeer on the water all settings remainded the same.Test 3 22'' rideplate boat got way to loose. Test stopped on length. Now we went short rideplates 16'' was tried and the difference was the tail was stuck so we got the bright idea to try no ridplate at all and this is where the fun begins. The boat accelerates good, gets to top speed OK but the shut down was pretty bad, boat came down extremely hard .That was basically the end of the test secession on rideplates. We felt that we could make the boat a little better in different water conditions with the aid of a different length rideplate. Not a good idea to run a boat without a rideplate. So all you guys makes sure you have the proper length, bolts to hold your underwater hardware on because you'd never want a rideplate to fall off!!!!"

Noting the fact that different boats are going to react differently to the same applications, I dont think it would be a good idea to "whop off" the rideplate at a specific lenght. But If I did, where would the measurements start from, in this order working from the front (intake) back to the end of the rideplate. You have three points where you would/could pull your measurement from, the longest point is the two tabs where it ties into the intake itself "fins", then there is the deepest part of radius where the plate molds with the intake, or the shortest point, the transom. What point do I pull of of to use as a reference when discussing ride plate length?

Is this my first thread-jack or am I ok, let me know and I'll start a new thread if needed.

at 1* up.... i think thats your problem right there...you want to be around 3* .....lil ricks boat was a degree or two off when he bought it and the previous owner had severe bow steering issues...so he (the previous owner) cut off the turn fin  :o ...rick took it over to jack over at MPD put a straight edge on it and knew right away why it was doing what it was doing. ....basically the previous owner hacked that turn fin off for no reason.

also, does the bottom have any hook in it? boats with hook that have droops tend to have porpising issues. putting your ride plate at 1* up will fix the porpising, but will lead to other issues (knifing and bow steering).

Typically the over all length of the plate itself (asuuming the shoe and rideplate arent one piece), and that would be about 3/4 to an inch longer than the measurment from the bottom/back of the intake (the part you machined) back.

When I was adjusting the ride plate after my initial setup, It was obvious that even a half turn up or down makes a noticeable difference. And living so close to the lake and having a pass, day after day,...well evening after evening ::). I was able to get it dialed in to the best spot it was going to get, I actually learned quite a bit just by reading these posts, making the adjustments and being able to test it right then and there. I am certain found the best angle performance wise, I will go and check the final angle and let you know what I ended up with.
So now I will need to get the steering dialed in, and it sounds like we are headed in the right direction.
After hearing and reading these posts, I am thinking I'll notice a pretty big difference with the ride plate shortened, one other issue is one of my fins has a nice nick out of it, I hit a rock on the Avi trip (dam things ..right in the middle of the river) ;D, there are no noticeable changes now but from what I have read in the past, about all I can do is even them out. But I will bring that up when I am under it and can take some pics.
Thanks for all the input........great imformation!!
John

This is the only pic that has the same underslung diverter I have. Seeing how I have to start drilling holes in the transom adapter, I'd really like to see underneith that swim step and see how the cables are routed.

Josh, any other pics you can share? (Or if someone else can post the same style so I can see the cables.....)

Your diverter is a Low profile system as oposed to the one on my glastron which is an "E" style diverter.  As you can see they took the reverse cable concept from the E diverter and applied it to the LPS(with slight variation).  The LPS is most common for use under swim platforms, so the platform does not have to be cut out for the cable/s.

On the E pump (glaston) the reverse cable goes straight back in to the hull, through the bello right above the steering cable.  On the LPS the cable is intended to be re-routed to the port side of the transom adapter to create an S bend.  The cable ataching point on the LPS is also about an inch higher than the one supplied with the E version, to better alow for the cable routing over the bowl.

So what is that canister that replaces the inlet cover for? I see it has a hose going to it - for engine breather possibly? Something else?

its a pop off valve....its for drag race application....it relieves pump pressure on shutdown

That's on the inlet side, so I assume it is really to help the shaft not snap and not really for the pump per se? am I close?

on shutdown (expected or not)...either the impeller stops (ie blown motor) or slows down to a speed too slow to allow water to pass though at high speeds....this causes back pressure to be built up in the suction housing and cause wild results at high speeds. because that water being forced into the pump has no where to go and will lift the back of the boat out of the water and cause violent bow steers. that valve relieves that pressure automaticly (at a designated pressure) or manually with an override button.

i do believe these are required in some NJBA classes.

now the above statements might not be 100% accurate as I dont have any first hand experience with them, its just what ive learned from talking to some of the drag guys at the races. If anyone would like to chime in with any corrections or additional comments, feel free.

they are about 7-inches long, which is enough for the extension and wedges should i need them.

the bucket is actually air-actuated. same principal as a hydraulic cylinder but without the mess when it leaks.
i switched to a fixed nozzle angle because i didnt like the amount of play that is present in a brand new morse cable. I measured 13 degrees of slop in the nozzle when the handle was in any one notch. Not a good thing at high speeds. I switched to a hydraulic diverter with up and down stops to solve the problem but after realizing i didnt need to move the nozzle during a race i took the hydaulic system out. I only use the adjustable rod now to set the nozzle angle where i want it depending on water conditions.

the cannister has a piston inside that closes off the hole where the handhole cover would normally go. Its air actuated so when i have 125psi inside the can it pushes the piston down. If inlet pressure spikes above that or if i think the boat is doing something i dont want it to, i hit a button of my steering wheel and vent the excess inlet pressure. It makes slowing the boat down from 125 mph much easier and it also enables me to hang the shoe down below the keel pretty much anywere i want without the boat hopping badly on shut down. Its called a pop-off.

Its not a secret. i'll snap a pic of it next time im in the shop. its a canvas cover that goes between the trailer bunks to cover the intake up. it keeps rocks and stuff out of it when i'm towing to the river and back. I got it from the cool cats at jet boat performance.
