Grease leaking?!!
« on: July 14, 2016, 08:22:13 AM »
Lots of grease randomly started leaking out of the main pump shaft bearing. Its coming out in globs under the shaft....is this something I can limp through the summer with if I pump it full of grease before each trip?

Randomly started leaking?

Did you grease it before the last trip out? Then its overfilled, and you'll be fine. With a mess.

The pump really only needs grease once or twice a year (50 to 100 hrs, depending on pump/use). Only a squirt or two at that. Its not like buddy bearings where ya pump 'em full.

If you didn't grease it before the last trip out, there maybe something going on. (more hp added? longer runs?)

It randomly started. It sat all winter then after my first trip out I noticed some leaking out. Then I greased it and it started coming out quite a bit. I'm sure I over-greased it once i saw the leak though.

Is there a way to tell if the bearing is fried? I've checked a couple times to see if its heating up but its always cool after a run..

Sounds like a failed grease seal. If the bearing is cool to the touch after a run and it's not talking to you, I say run the piss out of it. Just give it a shot of grease at the end of the day to keep water at bay.
