Place diverter dissapointment
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:31:09 AM »
Ive got a 74 tahiti with a 440 big block running a 12jc berkley jet. Recently installed a place diverter and am pondering why i cant hardly get a roost shooting up. The limiting factor ive found is that the diverter housing is hitting the top of the bowl when it is all the way up. Is there an obvious reason that im not realizing limiting the travel?

Do you have a real place d or a jetovator. Post a few pics...also do you have a split or c bowl?

Have you put it in the water and tried it yet? It may not look like much , but when you run it you may be surprised!

Everything looks right. Are you sure that you are getting full extension of the cable?

Ya the cables are adjusted for full travel. The thing that gets me is how little raise i get when it is all the way up? It does function as far as trimming off the boat i was expecting a giant roost though. Maybe with a wedge plate?

With a jc bowl you can’t add a wedge to get more roost. You would have to have a split bowl to use one. My jc with a diverter didn’t shoot that high ether. I have herd of people grinding the edges of the diverter where they hit to get more travel but I wouldn’t suggest it.

It may just be me, but that looks like an older race nozzle. Which is meant to stop just above the water, aka no roast...

My spectra had an E pump which is the save configuration at a C bowl and my diverter shot up like 15-20 feet. Here is a video.

If you have never had your boat on the water the diverter looks like it doesn't go up enough but it does. More to life than mph, a race nozzle doesn't have two cables on it. Typically they are open nozzles that you adjust by wedge.

In August you should try and make the circle boat races in long beach. Walk around the pits and look at some really nice boats. A lot of guys off this site show up. It's a ton of fun

I cannot find the post but some have ground the "stops" a little. Not too much or you will blow out and "O" ring on the nozzle.
Here is a vid before I did it. It was a lot higher after I did it. I do not have any vids though.

Might be because I haven't seen a nozzle like that, but that port on the underside for the reverse thrust looks like it would drag water really hard. I'd sawzall that thing off.

I actually went to the circle races at puddlestone last weekend, and went to the drags at Ming last year. Pretty cute stuff, and oh my god those boats! No words...

Puddingstone? Last weekend? You sure, the pudding races are the end of March I believe.

Mine was stiff when working it back and forth on the trailer.
Once I got it on the water and under power, it was amazing!

It was a bunch of v-drive guys doing circle races. I'm not sure if it was all league or what it was. But it was pretty interesting to watch.

In the pictures you posted none of them show the nozzle all the way in the up position. Are you sure you have it adjusted right. In one pic it looks all the way down and about half way up in the other. In the full up position the arm with the cable going thru it should almost touch the arm behind it. As for your Place Diverter it is a older one with the bucket that hangs down but i wouldnt worry it will work just fine, if you cut it off the boat wont really back up for shit.

Let me point out a few things. The diverter is not meant to "throw a big roost", it is to trim the boat. Grinding the nozzle will get you more roost, but as mentioned, be careful not to grind too far. If you've ever seen a pic of the pump while on plane, you've noticed the pump is out of the water and seldom does the reverse chute drag. If you want a big roost (careful, you CAN get cited for it) install a split bowl and wedge it. I guess it's personal preference.... my diverters are set up for the best trim, not highest roost. While it's fun watching someone roost a bridge, it IS a novelty. Indiscriminate use makes ALL jetboaters look bad.
A public service message from the other side of the jetboat community.....
